At the game yesterday was sitting in level 1 -M4. There was the nominated supporter from hell 2 rows back who was in Richmond colours unfortunately-the Pies jumper would have suited him much better. Anyway we were feeling sorry for the elderly gentleman and his daughter sitting behind us who were coping the full barage. Got talking to this guy who was not happy about the abuse this di#@#head was spraying and he mentioned in passing that he played 100 games for the Tigers. As it happened I had just taken a mate into the museum at Punt Road and brought the Tigers of Old book which categorizes all RFC players and reviews each one. I asked him what his name was and he said Fred Burge-I pulled this book out and he kindly signed it at his post in this book. Fred was our leading goalkicker in 1945 and was third in the best and fairest that year, a rover/backman-who was BOG in the the 1944 semi final. He kicked 5 goals or more on six occasions, was a member of the 1942 and 44 Grand Final teams. Fred was awarded life membership in 1951.I was rapt-he made my day and I am sure he was chaffed at the attention he got from people around him.
Went back to Punt Road at the end of the game and had a few beers over the paver in his name!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ah, Gordie, I'm green with envy!

Fred was my fave player at that time. I think - I might be wrong - but I think his photo was the first I ever bought at the ground. I used to scrabble around and collect the drink bottles and trade them in and use the money for Richmond photos.

Yep, that was a different age. We, RFC, were just about to embark on a long drought having won in 1943 and we reckoned - well, the adults reckoned, that we were only a couple of players short of another premiership!

Sound familiar? That would have made my day to meet Fred. Hi Fred! :wave
