The inclusion of Kayne Pettifer and Adam Houlihan to the Richmond squad selected to take on Essendon this Sunday at the MCG is, according to coach Danny Frawley, a reward for good form.

Both have starred for the club’s VFL side Coburg in recent weeks, particularly in front of goal, which is an area the Tigers have struggled of late.

In Coburg’s eight-point win over Springvale last weekend, Pettifer and Houlihan each booted five goals and Frawley is hoping the pair can help the team apply scoreboard pressure against the Bombers.

The 21-year old Pettifer hasn’t been sighted in the senior side since round 12, while Houlihan’s last match was against Geelong in round 15.

“We want to reward good form. Kayne’s form in the last two weeks – as with Adam Houlihan, I think they’ve kicked something like 17 goals between them,” Frawley said before training at Punt Road on Friday.

“Obviously the scoreboard wasn’t ticking over last week so that was a bit of a good sign from those two players.”

“We want to try to get the scoreboard ticking over if we can and we were able to do that the two weeks previous and we went back into something that wasn’t good enough last week.”

“We realise that Wellman, Fletcher, Jacobs, Solomon are quality defenders and we’ve got to make sure our forwards can win their fair share of the ball. For that to happen we’ve got to make sure we first and foremost get the ball in there.”

Arguably Richmond’s best win of the season came when the last time the two teams met in round seven.

But Frawley concedes the circumstances are quite different now and wants a team-orientated performance this weekend.

“We’ve got to make sure we get an even contribution from everyone in our team. We did that two weeks previous for a couple of weeks and then fell away last week miserably.”

Mark Chaffey, one of the club’s best ball-winners this season, was not present at training and is believed to have the flu, but should be in the team when the squad is trimmed to 22 on Friday evening.

Meanwhile, Frawley has dismissed any suggestion the team did the wrong thing by staying on the ground for Nathan Burke’s farewell last week.

“That’s their opinion. We did it with Silvagni, we did it with Paul Kelly and Andrew Dunkley. I think some of those people commenting on that probably haven’t played a lot of football.”

“We were devastated with the loss but at the end of the day, humility in defeat and victory has got to be foremost in everyone’s mind and that’s the way we treat every contest.”

(has this already been posted??)

Question: What do you do when you are playing a thug team?
Answer: You bring in the two biggest soft *smile* in the league to counter them.

“Obviously the scoreboard wasn’t ticking over last week so that was a bit of a good sign from those two players.”

The reason we struggle to score goals is due to the slow moving, grinding and predictable way we play. Add to that a number of players who aren't up to it and can't hit targets.

Please explain Danny how two VFL standard so called "mid-size specialist forwards" (that's a laugh) who have consistently gone missing numerous times in the past are going to solve this scoring problem if the footy never ever enters the forward line in a quick and systematic fashion? ???

And what long term purpose does dropping Schulz do, a young kid in his first season and in doing so deny him AFL experience, with only 3 games to go in a wasted year for Houlihan who will never be up to scratch and won't be a around next year. Idiotic stuff  .

Can't understand why they'd bother dropping Schulz now, but it is interesting that people interpret Houlihan as taking his place. I guess it doesn't sound as bad as saying Pettifer took his place. Still, it would be nice if both Pettifer and Schulz could play — maybe he still will if Chaff doesn't come up. Let's hope he goes back to Coburg and kicks a bag.

BTW, mighty, IMO we appear to play a negative, grinding style BECAUSE of the duds not hitting targets, not because we want to play that way all the time. It's the CAUSE of the problems rather than a symptom of the game plan. That's what happens when you miss your targets, or fail to move the ball quickly — more turnovers and stop plays, creating a grind. So I'd say that more often than not, the grind comes from bad football rather than by design. When we do hit our targets (eg earlier this season + Bulldogs game, etc) we actually do move the ball reasonably well.

I think we've fallen down very badly across half-back without Campbell and Cameron consistently moving the ball quickly and accurately out of defence. Add to that Joel Bowden's poor season and the job of bringing the ball out has been left to Kellaway, Fiora, Chaffey and Zantuck. Chaff is OK, but isn't as reliable by foot as some, ditto Kellaway and the other two are just plain dumb - especially Fiora. Without Gaspar, and with Holland being largely ineffective down back, opposition coaches have found it very easy to draw AK and Chaff deep and/or wide and we've really struggled to bring the ball out with any kind of coherence, direction or speed. No wonder it's hard for Richo/Staff/Ottens to find themselves in space and kick a winning score.

Agree entirely on what you say about the players Dean but will agree to disagree about the coaching staff. Danny himself has said on a number of occasions now before a game that "we'll need to grind out 4 quarters". IMO by the negative way we play we predictably look for contests and the other coaches have worked us out. There's virtually no running, attacking and more importantly systematic football. Our dud players only magnify this problem.

A mate of mine has a mate who is employed at another AFL club, who does the boards and he said that Richmond is undoubtedly the easiest side in the league to coach against.

Round 18 Best: Pettifer, Houlihan, Pagan, Carlson, Mills, Hyde.

Round17 Best: Houlihan, Carlyle, Carlson, Hyde, Whyman, Vardy.

Hyde gets in the best 2 weeks in a row and still can't get a game. Pettifer has 1 good game and he's back in ???
Yeah Spud I can see what you mean about the team being picked on form.

That's because our coach is a brain dead moron!

2004 wont be much better for us, but at least we will be rid of a few hacks. 2005 when a new coach takes over we might have a chance.

It just proves our list is not up to scratch.

How can Pettifer get a game ?

Well, lets see if he can prove anyone incorrect today against Essendon. However, I doubt he will.

I reckon under 5 possessions for the game.

Best from Coburg yesterday

Best: Talbot, Rogers, Mills, Shir, Hyde, Pagan.

Based on FRAWLEY's statement, HYDE must play next week, he has been in the best for the last few weeks.

Probably Rogers and maybe even MILLs.

Dare they promote SHIR. Would be good to see how he goes at the next level.

If 'form' was a criteria for selection then Lawrence Angwin would be a certainity for All Australian.

Sorry CC but that sort of Form doesn't count. At least not on the football field.

God wouldn't you love playing with this bloke.

Wouldn't want your home address left around the club would you.
