I have read with interest many postings on this site calling for many current players to be sacked and to be replaced with kids in the national draft.
What we have to realise is that there can only be so many changes next year. If the club delists 15 players and replaces them with 15 kids from the national draft, come round 1 next year the club will only have about 23 players that are ready to play AFL Football.
In any case probably half of these kids would have been taken at pick 70 or after in the national draft and history tells us that only about 5% of players taken at pick 70 or after go on and establish themselves as regular AFL players. Therefore if the club recruits kids for the sake of recruiting kids, there is every chance that some of these kids will have less to offer the Richmond Football Club than some of the current players that are under scrutiny.
I have listed the following players as those that are likely to come under the most scrutiny for next year.
- Clinton King
- Craig Biddiscombe
- Royce Vardy
- Mills
- Rogers
- Dragicevic
- Duncan Kelleway
- Pettifer
- Houlihan
- Adam Pickering
- Tim Fleming
- Rory Hilton
Many of these players will have no trade value as far as other clubs go.
The bottom line is that it is very difficult to simply delist all of these players and replace them with all with kids. The harsh reality is that there will probably be some players that have to retained (who in all reality are probably not up to AFL Level or who are past their best) simply because the club cannot delist half of its squad in one hit.
I would be interested in the thoughts of those people on this site who have been calling for mass sackings as to how they would manage the situation this situation that the club is facing. What would you do if you were appointed the Richmond Coach?
