An old coach of mine (he won't mind me calling him old, I hope... :)) used to love the saying, "The harder you work, the luckier you get." It was almost a mantra he used to live by (and made us live by every pre-season and training night).

Have a read of these comments from Darren Crocker from Eye of the Tiger, regarding Nathan Brown:

As a small forward, it’s good to be able to free yourself up occasionally and have a run around in the midfield, especially if you are wearing a close tag. Because Browny can have such an impact when he pushes up the ground, it adds another string to his bow.

I mentioned Leon Cameron’s exquisite kicking skills on both feet earlier, but from one ex-Bulldog to another, Browny's kicking around the ground is nearly as good as it gets.

This brings his teammates into the game as well.

If you watched Nathan closely you, too, undoubtedly would make the observations I have. What a lot of people would not see, however, is how hard he works on his game.

He has put some of our players to shame with the amount of time he spends working on his field kicking, ground level play, marking on the lead under pressure, crumbing and his general goalkicking.

While it's disappointing that he put some of our players to "shame", it's great to have such a professional player come to the club and bring the required work ethic with him. I hope his attiude can rub off on others, then we will see a lift in skills, second efforts and all the other little things that go into making a successful AFL side.

Onya Brownie, keep up the great work. ;D

Good post. Brown is the classiest player on our list by the length of the Milky Way.

As for work ethic, it's been obvious to all that our club just doesn't get it when it comes to this.

For some reason it has become acceptable to just 'not turn up' to maybe 7 or 8 games a year - maybe even more. It looks like we are finally making some changes, but for too many years this has been tolerated and accepted because players simply get away with poor showings.

Perhaps work ethic is also why so many Richmond players don't 'come on' - and the report about Fiora turning up late after sleeping in might just be an example about this (biggest recruiting mishap in a decade, sorry Aaron, it's not your fault but you're really struggling to win some of us over mate)

One of the things you have to admire about a team like Essendon is that, even though they have the talent, their work ethic is second to none. Watch how hard they run off the ball - and they might only have one or two really poor showings a year, hey, it's hard to keep it up for 22 rounds. But you rarely see them beaten by lesser sides because they are not allowed to relax - all good teams know the key to success is hard, hard work
