The problem with the standing rule (along with many other problems), is that it allows a team to flood back, and not get trapped inside the oppositions forward line.
At our peak, when we went forward ballistically, teams couldn't stop our forward thrusts so they started to just flood and stay back. At first it worked to a degree, an example being the almost nil all draw against Collingwood early 2020 5.6.36 a piece.
Then we got smarter with our entries, and when teams folded back like this, it just meant that the ball literally lived in our forward line. It was a case of, okay, if you want to wait for us down there, then all good, but we won't let you back out"!
Now, a team can exit easily from a behind score or any other clean possession, so flooding now pays off.
The lunacy was that ballisitc high scoring went up against Geelongs chip it around bore fest in the 2020 Grand Final and Ballisitic won, so the trend was set for the natural evoluion of the game that would have seen higher scoring.
As it turns out, they "f'" around with the rules, and the standing rule gets the credit for the increase in scoring, when in reality the higher scoring teams were starting to take a leaf our of our play book. Now however, those gains are dissapearing as the standing rule brings the chip, chip bore fest game back into vogue.
What worries me about our coaching selection, is that one of the prime candidates comes from a team that chips it around so much that by the time they get it forward, they have 18 defenders parked in their forward line so that 60 forward 50 entries = 8 or 10 goals a game.
To make matters worse, we are already seeing 50m penalties cost finals games because a player moves on the mark after being told to stand still.
Worse is that the higher scoring against us in 2021 seemed to make our coaching staff question our own game plan, which now looks nothing like the Richmond DNA. If you want to see what our game plan looked like, watch GWS right now and how often they outnumber at the contest. We are nothing like this at all anymore and i'm afraid we will be watching teams win flags with game plans based on how we were playing, while we start to chip it around like Melbourne.
Our coaching staff either blinked because of the stand rule, or we just no longer had the cattle to execute it anymore!
