This is probably a question for Harry but I noticed Surjan played quite well for Port yesterday and I remember you have been rabbiting on about how he was one player we should have picked.

Could you tell me which draft and what number he was picked and also his junior footballing background.

Aaaahhh....James Brayshaw 03.  Finally some-one else has identified this kid.  He will be a gun.

I beleive he was picked up in the pre-season draft.  We picked Marsh and Weller ahead of him........makes you wonder doesn't it.

I also beleive that he was named in the U18 all-Australian team last year.  I hadn't seen him play but what I had read about him on the net was that he was a standout last year.  He was a shock ommision in the draft.

Makes you wonder what efforts our (and other) recruiting people put into identifying young talent.  One glance at this kid and I knew he could play.  He's the exact mould that Port always go after - fast, skillfull, running, ball carrying type.

With a heap of late picks that we had it was disappointing we didn't go for an all-australian instead opting for a dud from carlton and a son of a former great who hadn't shown much.

Thanks harry. BTW, not james brayshaw (who marginally irritates me - refer other threads) but jim bowie.

Anyway, thanks for the info. I just wonder what mindset a recruiter has when he speculates a pick on a used player rather than an untried player with excellent junior credentials. On average , the immediate success is probably in favour (though only slightly) of the recycled but the long term must heavily favour punting on the youngster.

Surely it can't be the 1 v 2 year contract thing as mentioned on other threads.

Yeh Surjan was highly touted before the draft and it appears it was for good reason.I'm suprised he went so low too.

Port seem to be the masters at identifying young talent. The depth of their side is awesome.Guys like Salopek and Cassisi get limited time in their midfield where at any other club they'd be touted as future champs.

Yes evo - Salopek is the other one. He was ready for the taking by us the year before with our then pick number 4. But yet again we went for the short term option and went for mid-aged Johnson. Salopek will be dominating the comp when Johnson checks into one of Casey's retirement homes.

Salopek is a strong, pacy, skillful ball carrier,........something we've got a stockpile of.....lol..

Another one in that mould is Cassisi too.
Impressed by his work ethic yesterday

the whole team shows the work ethic that you talk about struggle. It flows on from the the work ethic shown by Tredreas and the wanganeens, and for the most part the leadership group, not one of them looks disenterested and non committal to get the job done. The kids feed off this and have to come to the party. And id they dont then they are quite quckly whisked off the barron lands of the SANFL to gather their thoughts on what is the required ethic.

Aaaahhhh - the Clawed one.........finally a man with vision.

Furfaro, Surjan, Bentick, Johnson, Davey, Cosgriff were just a number of well credentialled youngsters that were available when we had numerous late draft picks and 2 PSD picks.

All Beck and Co. had to do was go to the web and find out who the better players were if they weren't able to attend games to see for themselves.

But i would be taking red figures from the bookies backing you to do a better job than Beck and co.
Come on mate we will back you all the way.....LOL, youcan rewrite the way recruiting heads in the new decade, online shopping is doing big business, so you might as well put online recruiting into the mix....LMAO
