I've never really thought retiring jumper numbers was a good idea, but for our first immortal, and someone who is such a large part of our clubs history, it would certainly be appropriate.

Is the only other number that we've retired number 29?

And now that is another embarrassing situation for the club, and KB.

Give 17 to a guy who will kill for Richmond. Only one of the current crop who comes close, wears 24.

give it to coughlan...he'll want to wear it, and he'll do it justice too.

I reckon if Jack could give his jumper to any player in the Richmond team it would be Mark Coughlan.

Coughlan is fierce, tough and has that never say die attitude. You can see the pain of defeat on his face. Perhaps number 17 should be given to a Richmond player who deserves to wear it.

I don't believe in retiring numbers. The fact Hudson wore #17 has no effect on Jack's memory.

One day someone else will do it proud though.

Maybe #24 will long be remembered in Richmond folklore as the number made famous by Cogs.

Hungry wore #29, but Torney made it his number for a while.

Numbers are only numbers, we'll forget the duds who wore them and always associate them with players who did us proud.

Part of me wouldn't mind if No 17 was retired. It could become an icon, a big No 17 overseeing Punt Road ground, Tigerland, just as JD played all his home games there.
But if we began retiring all the great numbers, someone would ultimately take the field wearing 1042, or some such!
To give it to a player leads to uncertainity...would if he plays just one blinder of a year and, forever after, sucks?
Could it be awarded to the B&F each year, then if they crash the next year, it's only one year. Might be an incentive to better things????

I don't believe so.

Instead, give the number 17 to some worthy of it.

Someone that shows true tiger spirit and will make all of us proud.

not retired but like most on here to the player who plays like jack and bleeds yellow and black.
cogs would be perfect.

Although I like the idea of retiring a jumper for one year as a mark of respect for a recently retired champion of the Club (knighter's #33 guernsey), I don't believe we should retire a jumper for eternity. Let it live on on the field where it belongs as a reminder to the present of those who did the Club proud in the past. Just like Dyer and Rioli, someone someday will again come along and do justice to the #17 guernsey once again.

ps. Let Cogs make his own history in his 24 guernsey.

Mightytiges, you are 100% spot on.
let players develop there own piece of history.
Everyone will remember Joel bowden for putting 11 into the hall of shame ! ;)

No......

The no. 17 guernsey is so special to me, because it was Jack Dyer's no..

I never had the great fortune to see Jack play, but after reading his life story and playing history at Richmond it has become my favourite no..

The no. 17 must be given to a special player such as Cogs, who can carry on the fine tradition. This way, the following generations can find out the specialness of the number as I have done. And the outcome will be.....Captain Blood remains the true Tiger legend that he is now and should be forever more....

Here is a novel idea, why not start a tradition that says the Captain of the Richmond Football Club wears No. 17!

RIP Captain Blood, Heaven is a better place now that you are there.

There have been some good reasons for not retiring the number but I think there are better reasons for retiring it. For a start nobody could ever make it their own number it will always be Jacks. So to give it to Cogs now would put a hell of a lot of pressure on the kid. I still associate the No 24 with Billy Barrot maybe in 10 years time I will come to see it as Cogs number but never 17.
No individual is bigger than the club but I think that nobody else has come as close as JD as to almost being the club. He was certainly larger than life. Finally Richmond has some fine traditions and to retire 17 would be the start or the end of another one. The number would become associated with the club, kids would grow up in the future learning why nobody at Richmond wears 17 and most of all I beleive Jack Dyer deserves it.
