To the bloody Richmond Football Club are you listening!!!

Check 'The Age' website and read the article regarding the Saints suggesting they are the next big thing. It is slightly hinted that it is at the expense of Richmond and Carlton. I didn't want to post it all on here because it's mostly St. Kilda crap, but it gave me a chilling feeling that my club, the RFC is becoming a shrinking violet.

Are we the RFC at the precipice (MaQuarie Dictionary meaning "a situation of great peril") of slipping in the football world, especially in Melbourne? Do the Saints want our mantle as one of the Big Four? The Bummers, Pies and Blues all have at least 35,000 - 40,000 members and we can't even make the high 20's. It also worries me that we will continue with a coach that appears from the outside to have no idea and many people are threatening not to renew in '04.

Sorry all, but I am still seething from the St.Kilda game the other week. BAD real bad. I still need to vent my pain.

Seeth all you want, but what was written is basically true.

Now the Saints have sorted out their mess and got a good list which looks to be going places, the members/supporters return in droves.

As we appear to be heading south with no brakes to halt the slide, the members/supporters stop attending and this is the end result.

I have no doubt that Ian Campbell and Co will have read this article several times and will once again look at what has to be done to ensure that the tiges remain a genuine AFL power.

Unfortunately, the real problem is set to continue for another year, so this situation is more than likely to happen.

The Saints ...please... they win a few games late in the season against hacks and all of a sudden they are blockbuster status........there big drawing games are agianst the big clubs...the handouts as far as player concessions they recieved are an blight on the AFL and any fairdinkum competition

Arghhhh..............Laff... insightful, accurate and honest

You are a breath of fresh air

:D ;D :D ;D

I always laugh when clubs claim "blockbuster" status. A blockbuster is about bums on seats. Scheduling a game does not make it a blockbuster - it's the attendance that matters. Even with a rank membership this year the Tigers are still in the top 3 Victorian CLubs for home attendances. We need to be as bad as the Saints for a long period of time to get the concessions that have been dealt to them. They have something like 8 first round draft picks in their current side. Any success they have in the future will be more a result of their ineptitude in the recent past rather than good management. At least they recruit well - take note Beckhead.

This from the AFL website today in a story about Collingwoods drawing power. Take note Rod Butterfingers. Even though we're a rabble we still pull crowds.

"Essendon and Richmond – the AFL’s second and third most popular clubs based on total crowd figures."

Fair point RFC not KFC, but just because Clubs get concessions, does not mean that success will follow.

Good management now and in the future will take them to success. Bad management will keep them where they have been, regardless of the concessions they get.

They need to do be doing something right themselves to make the concessions mean anything.

That's why I mentioned their recruiting. Even Beck could surely find at least a couple of decent picks given 8 tries. Dont forget that there were standout players such as Reiwolt, Gall, Goddard and Kositchke (or whatever his name is) who Blind Freddy could recognise as fair dinkum talent.

You give Beck too much credit RFC not KFC. He couldn't find talent in the All Australian team.

Anyway I wouldn't worry about St Kilda dominating the league for the next decade or anything. I'd put large amounts of cash on Carlton winning a premiership before St Kilda do. We'll probably hear about how talented this St Kilda lineup is and how if they can just get it together they'll dominate the competetition. Before you know it all their stars will be 30, past their best and chronic under-achievers like all those before them. And the cycle will repeat again.

St Kilda dont have the supporter base to earn blockbuster status. Its like giving The Western *smile* blockbuster status.

Everyone loves a winner, and presently they have been winning. Look at the crow attendances when they were losing, dreadful.

We have an absoulute hughe supporter base. Should we have had the success of Essendon or Carlton (thru the 80s-90s), were'd no doubt have the biggest membership.

However, fact is we've been dreadful and the membership isnt what it should be. I cant blame some people for not renewing.

The scary thing about St Kittylitter is that they have got the prime of the last few drafts, they are starting to play some real good footy, their management etc. have disappeared from the news(which means its working properly) and they do have a large feral supporter base. They are in that little groove where everything is going well at the same time. Its time to be afraid very afraid , the Saints might just be a top side for the next 5/10 years _______________________Don't it make you wanna puke.

St Kilda also had the prime youngests in 1996/97. Look how quicky they fell away.

Also that the salary cap will take its toll. As they have so many early draft picks and most will gain superstar status, they will want their true market value to be paid and this is where St Kilda will come undone. Remember that financially, St Kilda isnt travelling too well.

you idiot, the saints have kicked arse financially this year.
and why you guys so upset about losing the blockbusters? these things go in circles, you'll get it back in a few years anyway.
and for paying out st kilda....a few wins at the end of the year against crap sides?? West Coast ring a bell? and you shouldn't call your own side crap ::).
The saints have beaten Adelaide after they won the night GF...Brisbane need I say more... WC when they were 2nd on the ladder...
And Tigers have beaten???
Freo in Melbourne.... Bombers when they were down...
Good on ya guys ::) You're a real touchy lot aren't you?

If your posts were deleted it would have been by me and not because I was censoring your views. I can't remember doing it but if I did it would because the posts broke the rules of this site, ie swearing or abuse.

One year doesnt make St Kilda soundly financial.

What about the past 5 years ? St Kilda have racked up one loss after another. They are in the red financially.

of course we were sh!thouse back then.. but with our new board, we're going forward. while we're at it, lets talk about the eighties.... ::)

you duds are a blight on the comp, if you get anywhere its because of the handouts (Concessions) for being patheitc....so they climb up the ladder and win a flag who will care it would have been handed to them for being pathetic clubs like the saints make up the numbers in 5 10 20 years in a real comp they wont be there and not before time Im sick of clubs like ours proping them up

Are you talking about the same board that appointed Malcolm Blight as coach and then sacked him in the middle of the season.

That was a costly exercise for the club. Didnt that cost St Kilda a rumoured $1,000,000 ?

Oh, by the way, who have Richmond beaten ???? Didnt we beat St Kilda this year.

Hey, St Kilda have some good young players, my point is, as they become better and make a name for themselves, St Kilda will not be able to keep the team in tact. Unless they all agree to get paid less than their market value.

Look at Essendon, the salary cap has done them damage and they were forced to release players.

I personally find it hard to believe that in 1997, St Kilda made the Grand Final after rebuilding their team. Only to finish last in 3-4 years after. Something went extremely wrong in such a short period.

I really do hope St Kilda do well and good luck to them. They are suffered as much as Richmond has and I do hope they have learnt for some past mistakes.

On field success should result in a profit for the club and hopefully St Kilda will get over their financial woes. Fact is St Kilda is not travelling too well financially. Just call the club and ask for a copy of their annual report. They need a few good years of making profits to get out of the red.
