Well here we are. Another boring summer over and back to another season of football.

Hopefully we see the Dogs beat Dynastybourne tonight as some heads need to be deflated.

Demons already have three of their starting 22 out with injury. They probably wont have the charmed run like last year. Lets see how good they are with players rated 25-30 on their list.

Hmm, much as I would like to see Melbourne heads deflated I actually wouldn't mind seeing them get off to a flyer, pump up their heads even more and then a mediocre second half of the H&A season leaving them in maybe 6th or 7th - win a final and lose the Semi. That looks to be more fun but maybe I'm just twisting the knife. The trouble is Melbourne are very good, did address their issues from a few years ago, have a good age profile and really do go into this season as well deserved favourites. Plus, their history is of winning flags in bunches (excepting maybe 1900 when every team was in the finals). We'll see.

I picked Melbourne in a close one tonight. I reckon Footscray would have been working on how to prevent that run on Melbourne got in the Grand Final, but I still don't see where Footscray have plugged their gaps in defence and how they will combat the dominance of Gawn.

Will be interesting to see the new Holding the Ball interpretation. It sounded logical enough in an article the other day, but we'll see how it goes and if the AFL can resist the urge to change the interpretation a few times during the season. They need to make a call and stick to it. I expect to see a fair few 50m penalties as the AFL try and enforce the new umpire abuse rule, again, they need to make the call and enforce it every single time or the fans will have every reason to get frustrated. If they want behaviour change, enforce it early and don't back off.

All good points DS. I'll be interested in how these umpires perform too. TBR will need to get ready for many prosecution cases this season.....:mhihi

Nah, TBR will just attack you if you comment unfavourably on the umpiring, apparently it is not allowed.

I will be interested to see how they go. I may hate things like the stand rule (doesn't everyone?) but what p1sses me off even more about it is the way they let players run miles off their line without calling play on and the massive inconsistencies in the play on call. I've seen players called to play on when they haven't walked back to make their next move, and others take 5 or 6 steps sideways before being called to play on.

I just hope they have found a better balance with the prior opportunity/holding the ball rule. Prior opportunity is not a simple rule, when you look back at footy many years ago it wasn't really needed, but a faster game with more effective tackling has changed things. The lax enforcement of holding players before they have the ball has exacerbated this (and simply is not going to change), but the article I saw the other day seemed to have more specific guidelines as to what is and isn't considered prior opportunity. I really want to see them stick with consistent interpretations for the whole season and the finals, would mean the umpires are not trying to adjust their interpretations every second week too.

Highlight already is Gaddy calling 70000 a "full house" about 5 times. How desperate are they to be us.

With just 4 mins before the bounce, are my eyes deceiving me or is that looking like an abysmal crowd for the first game of the season ?

Watching the Dees is like watching Richmond from our premiership years.

Dogs look asleep but let's not forget those super effort quarter time false dawns we've gone through many times in the past. It would be even better to let Dynastybourne inflate their heads further to quarter time and then fall with a thump in the last 3 quarters.
