Assuming Richmond get Taranto and Hopper. We will have:

Midfield: Prestia Hopper Taranto

Forwards: Bolton Martin Graham

Rotations: Cotchin Sonsie

Mid/forwards: Taranto Bolton Martin Sonsie Graham

I hope the Short midfield experiment is over and we can address our stoppage issues that have haunted us this season. The thing I like most about the midfield is the amount of players who can swap between midfield and forward and obviously the depth will be far greater. Further, for the future we have a martin replacement and a cotchin replacement

After week 1 I was a fan of the Short midfield experiment, week 3 onwards lost my fanmanship. Is he playing the Lambert role? If so, who takes his role? And where does Short play? For me Short is a HB or bust

Short can only be played off D50 or backward of stoppage.

I think we’ll slot him back into the defensive mix and try to turn Baker into a mid.

Baker is more of a conundrum for mine. As courageous as all get out, can occasionally look good by foot but is often sloppy.

The reality is Bakes is too short for D50. Vulnerable to air ball.

With the forward line settled, I’d swap Short and Baker.

It seems the obvious change that if we obtain Taranto and Hopper, Short will be moved from the midfield and maybe he does move back to defence. But I reckon he is more likely to be given a chance in the high half forward role. He has the running power and his poor contest work will not be as easily exploited.

With Baker though, i have posted this before, but for mine he is too small to be played in the midfield. He is good enough but he when he moves inside the contest, the opposition target him physically. Put simply he gets bashed up and his fantastic fighting fighting spirit means he never backs down.

We will shorten his career if he plays too much midfield time and he is too good a player to be sacrificed like that.

Will the midfield help fix our defence. Our defence was a sea this year, injuries, inconsistently, but I reckon that was also part to do with the lack of midfield grunt and depth.

Edwards often lined up on the wing whenever KMac or Marlion was taking a break.
Short could be the bloke to do that - albeit that it involves limited minutes

I think Graham or Sonsie play the lambert role now and I assume Short will be back in the backline next season

Im really loving the way the Midfield is looking with Taranto & Hopper adding size and grunt to the existing flair we already have and the depth it provides combined with a fit Dusty , Sonsie with a preseason and hopefully another improved year from Ross & Dow.

Taranto , Bolton , Dusty rotating Fwd/Mids not only will our midfield be deeper but the fire power in our Fwd line is going to be extremely difficult to contain

I also think that Maurice Jnr. (after another pre-season) can be rotated through the midfield. His speed, tackling and smarts could see him being another mid/forward. The more depth the better (to cover injuries and manage older bodies like Cotchin's, Prestia and Martin). Like to see Short go to a wing rotation (our wingers KMac and Pickett are around 30). Its a role for playes with a big tank now - we probably need to be grooming the next gen of these (maybe will come from one of our two picks from last season that have yet to play - Banks / Brown). We really should have a versatile team with plenty of depth next season - a depth that has alluded us at times over the last couple of seasons.

Midfield is the key to the game. A good midfield can protect a poor defence and can make the forward line look good. We need the HB flankers, wingers and HF flankers be able to rotate in the midfield. We need to have as many good midfielders as we can

Today was the first time we saw what the midfield can do when with the additions of Tarranto and Hopper.

But what I loved the best was the midfield mix - Tarranto, Hopper, Prestia, Martin, Bolton and Short. Dynamic. 10 goals between them.

Samson had a lot to do with it.
