I always have mixed emotions whenever I watch a tape of the last quarter of Rich v Essendon in Round 3, 1982 (from a Richmond Footy Flashbacks video).

Richmond were superb in that last quarter before an Easter Monday crowd of 90 000, kicking 10 goals to 2 and running away to win by 60 points.

To watch the Richmond midfield was to see class personified - Raines, Rioli, Weightman, Rowlings, Wood. Phil Egan impressed on the wing in one of his early games.

The backline didn't have the stars but was a very solid and reliable one, with Malthouse, Jess, Strachan and Landy leading the way. Daryl Sutton was at full-back, playing one of his very few games for the club.

The forward line was chock full of talent with BT, KB and Roach all there. The only weakness was having both BT and Roach on the forward line at the same time, it didn't seem to really work.

Of course, the downside of watching this as knowing that it was all to fall apart within 12 months, as the club's greatest strength, its ruthlessness, became their greatest weakness and threw away all the respect and success they had earned over the previous 15 years.

Something that has yet to be regained.

I remeber being at this game - I was all of nine. I don't actually remember the game itself - however I do remember the emotion and ambience of the crowd. And I also remember sitting below the cheersqad, behind the goals at the PRE.

Ironically I was with an Essendon supporter, however I guess they have had the last laugh since.

What tape could I watch that game on?

You can find it on the link above and purchase it, called Faboulous Footy Flashbacks - Richmond. There are two volumes for Richmond and the one with the Rich v Essendon 1982 match has Rex Hunt's face on the cover.

Also has the final stages of the drawn 1972 Qualifying Final and the epic last quarter of the 1973 Preliminary final.

Well worth buying.

Man.I'll never forget that game.
Went to it with 2 mates -both poms -one a manchesterian and a birmingham dude.
I converted the manchester dude to barrack for the tiges and the other guy being a smug cocky type thought that the bummers were gonna win easily.
Wow what a win and m8 the mcg was packed like sardines that day-mostly bummers .
We sat in the cheersquad -the cheersquad in those days was monolithich (massive).Alot of ghetto blasters pumping out old metal tunes (maiden priest)
Aah those were the days.Look at us now LMAO!!!
One of the great Tiger wins though.

I was there too. But all of you forgot a wiley old fox called Robert Wiley. He kicked 6 goals that day - not bad for rover / centre. When was the last time one of our midfielders did that?
IMHO he was BOG that day.

What a great game - I have the whole game on video somewhere....haven't watched it for ages....it was quite close all day then we went berserk in the last ;D
