Port Adelaide analysis - How to beat Port

Port Adelaide are a contest orientated team who highly value both contested possessions and centre clearances. They run a forward press where they aim to get the ball in quickly to their forward fifty and lock the ball in. They were ranked number 2 for time in forward half last season (2nd to only Richmond) and opponents struggle to move the football out of their d 50 to attack against port especially when they play on the narrow wings of Adelaide oval. Their gameplay somewhat mirrors Richmond with a couple of talls and a few speedy small forwards who can apply pressure to opponents. Teams that have beat Port in the last 12 months have been the ones who have beat them in the middle

Since the start of 2020:

When Port Adelaide do not lose contested possession and centre clearances they are 13-0 with a percentage of 170%

Conversely when they lose both contested possessions and centre clearances they are 0-3 with a percentage of 49.4%

When they win one of contested possessions or centre clearances and lose the other they hold a record of 3-1 with a percentage of 146.9% with their sole loss against Richmond in the prelim

Finally in situations where Port Adelaide lose or win in contested possessions or clearances whilst breaking even in the other stat they are 2-0

We play them interstate in round 4 and beating them up at the coalface we go a long way to getting the crucial 4 points

Be a top 8 side, they don't do as well as ppl might think against those sides last yr thier % v top 8 was 93...

Initially I was frustrated that we have to keep playing Port in Adelaide and not at the G but in hindsight, this could be a good thing if we both make the last game in Sept, they won’t know what hit them whereas an away game against Port has no fear for us.

Apart from that elimination final, we seem to match up well against them (without checking the stats)

The easiest way to beat Port is to play them in a final. Plastic club that melts under real pressure.

Cross that bridge when we come to it. Focus right now should be on the team we play next.

But they were 5-4 against top 8 sides last year

Looking down their lists of games, theres a bit more context though.

Top 4
Lions at Gabba - L by 37 points
Tiges at AO - W by 21 points
Cats at Gabba - L by 60 points
Finals - Cats at AO - W by 16 points
Finals - Tiges at AO - L by 6 points

Top 4 win rate 40% - Collective margin negative 66 points

Top 5-8
Eagles at Metricon - W by 48 points
Saints at AO - L by 29 points
Bulldogs at AO - W by 13 points
Collingwood at Gabba - W by 16 points

Top 5-8 win rate 75% - Collective margin 48 points

Adelaide Oval win rate 60% - collective margin 15 points (5 games of 9)
"True" home ground advantage - win rate 0% - margin 37 points (1 game)
Neutral ground - win rate 66% - collective margin 4 points (3 games)

Against the best teams, they don't have the quality to match it. Particularly being as only 1 of those teams did they play in a "true" away game and they lost that by 37 points. They will play more of these teams on their actual home ground instead of neutral like they did last year.

Comparing this to your home ground advantage in 2019. We played 10 times at the MCG against other top 8 finishers. Winning 8 of them so 80% win rate with a collective margin of 150 points (including 2 finals at 100%).

This includes the game in 2019 when we played the Cats with a VFL team playing when we lost by 67 points.

Port Adelaide are one of the strongest contenders this year but I think our 6 point win over them in the prelim last year really flatters Port.
1) They were on their own dungheap with the crowd 100% theirs and the umpires heavily favouring them - 19 to 24
2) Game was only 80% of regular time i.e. 16 min v's 20 min qtrs. This is on top of the "sprint season" not the normal "marathon" season 17 games v's 22. i.e. 77% of a normal season. We know we grind down teams and are red-time specialists
3) We had 16 scoring shots to their 10- 60% more than them but they just happened to be points (in the wet).

I do agree, except "Behinds" not points

Win over there and we are one big leg up in avoiding a final in SA. Not that that idea sends us into panic.

Why do people need to over complicate things? There is only one way to beat them. Outscore them by at least a point
