In the lead-up to the new season, afl.com.au presents its 2004 player previews. afl.com.au's Matt Burgan takes a look at every player from every club and sums up neatly where they're at and what they have to offer.
Today, it's RICHMOND: Senior list: 39 players. Rookie list: three players.
Kyle Archibald – A tall, aggressive young forward who will further his development via the VFL in 2004. The final player picked in the 2003 National AFL Draft at No.81.
Justin Blumfield – The midfielder’s first year with Richmond was ruined by a thigh injury and he will be looking for a big year in 2004 after having success with Essendon.
Joel Bowden – Class midfielder/forward who has played 131 consecutive games, but still has his critics. An important player looking to take his game to another level in 2004.
Nathan Brown – The Tigers’ boom recruit will be an outstanding asset to the club as a midfielder/forward. A genuine match-winner who should display his abilities in 2004.
Wayne Campbell (v) – The Richmond captain suffered calf and achilles injuries in 2003 and should bounce back to make a considerable difference in the midfield in 2004.
Mark Chaffey – Had his best AFL season in 2003, when he firmly established himself as a vital member of the Tigers’ defence. Will be looking to continue this form in 2004.
Mark Coughlan – Stepped up even further in 2003 to win the club’s best and fairest after a terrific 2002. A brilliant young midfielder who is crucial to the club’s fortunes.
Aaron Fiora – Had a solid year in 2003, playing 21 games and will be looking to go another step in 2004. Can play down back, in the midfield and up forward. 23 in 2004.
Tim Fleming – Made his AFL debut at 25 in 2003 and played 17 games before suspension ended his year. Hard-at-it midfielder/forward who faces important year.
Simon Fletcher – Moves to his third AFL club after playing 84 games with Carlton. Honest midfielder looking to re-establish his AFL career in 2004. Crucial year ahead.
Darren Gaspar – Sorely missed in the second half of 2003 due to a knee injury, but is on course for the start of 2004. One of the AFL’s best key defenders. Crucial to the side.
Alex Gilmour – The club’s No.1 pick – and the youngest player taken – in the 2003 National AFL Draft. Midfielder set to develop via the VFL in 2004. Long-term prospect.
Ray Hall – Almost traded and then lost as an uncontracted player in the off-season but remains a Tiger and will be looking to step up in 2004. Versatile key forward/defender who can also ruck.
Brent Hartigan – Skillful, small defender/midfielder who was taken in the 2003 National AFL Draft. Set to develop in the VFL in 2004 but is an outside chance to debut.
Rory Hilton – Can play down back, in the midfield or up forward, but will be looking to regain a spot in the best 22 after two seasons ruined by injury and form. Crucial year.
Adam Houlihan – Opportunistic forward who faces a crucial year after injuries and form halted his season in 2003. Turns 26 in 2004 and will be desperate to make an impact.
Chris Hyde – Midfielder entering his fourth year with the club and with eight games to his name, will be looking to step up. 22 in 2004, he faces an important year.
Daniel Jackson – Talented forward/midfielder set to be a developing player in 2004. A strong runner and hard-at-it, Jackson is a 17-year-old, viewed as a long-term prospect.
Kane Johnson – Class midfielder who had a terrific first-up year with the Tigers after being a dual premiership player with Adelaide. Remains crucial to the side in 2004.
Andrew Kellaway – Had another fine season in 2003 and remains one of the most consistent and integral players at Tigerland. Brave, yet underrated, key defender.
Duncan Kellaway (v) – Much-admired Tiger injury-hit in recent times. Defender/run-with player hoping to remain injury-free and stay in the best 22. Possibly his last season.
Andrew Krakouer – Pacy goalsneak who played 18 games and had his best season in 2003, in just his third season. Will be looking to go another notch in 2004. 21 in 2004.
Ben Marsh – 1998 Adelaide premiership player looking to re-establish his career with the Tigers. A 202cm ruckman who adds depth to the squad, but faces an important year.
Shane Morrison – Emerging key forward/defender who was starved of opportunities with the Lions and will be desperate to show his wares in 2004. Looms as a fine recruit.
Chris Newman – Played every game in 2003 – a fine effort – in just his third season at the club. A defender/midfielder looking to consolidate and remain consistent in 2004.
Bill Nicholls – Hard-at-it midfielder/forward who played eight games in his first year at the club, but enters his fifth year in the AFL. Looking to step up in 2004. Crucial year.
Brad Ottens – One of the most important players at Tigerland, the ruckman/key forward was sidelined by a back injury early in 2003 before finishing the season strongly. Will be a vital to the club’s fortunes in 2004.
Kayne Pettifer – Entering his fourth year, the midfielder/forward was the club’s No.1 pick in the 2000 National AFL Draft. Faces big year as he looks to become a regular.
Andrew Raines – Lightly built midfielder who will be a development player for the Tigers via the VFL in 2004. A 17-year-old who will be given time. The son of Geoff.
Matthew Richardson – Superstar key forward and genuine match-winner who is pivotal to the club’s success. Will be looking to stay injury-free and on his game in 2004.
Tom Roach – Son of Michael taken via the father/son rule in the 2003 National AFL Draft. Set to develop via the VFL, he is an outside chance to debut in 2004. Midfielder.
David Rodan – Livewire forward/midfielder who has played 44 consecutive games since his first season in 2002 – a fine achievement. Will look to go another notch in 2004.
Matthew Rogers – Versatile mid-sized type entering his 11th AFL season. Will be 30 for the 2004 season, but faces a crucial year after losing his spot towards the end of 2003.
Jay Schulz – Emerging key forward/defender likely to taste more AFL football in 2004 after playing five games in his first year in 2003. One to keep an eye on. 19 in 2004.
Greg Stafford – The ruckman/key forward will be looking for a big 2004 after two solid seasons with the Tigers. Can be one of the most influential big men in the game.
Greg Tivendale – Penetrating left-footed midfielder, who had a fine season in 2003, finishing third in the best and fairest. Will look to continue that form in 2004. 25 in 2004.
Shane Tuck – After a fine year in the SANFL, the son of Michael gains a second crack at AFL level, having been a Hawthorn rookie. Versatile type set to debut in 2004.
Luke Weller – Key forward/defender who was a Lions’ rookie from 2001-03. Made debut in 2003, playing four games and is likely to gain further opportunities in 2004.
Ty Zantuck – Has had two consistent seasons playing every game in 2002/03 mainly in defence. Entering his fifth season, he should continue to prosper in 2004. 22 in 2004.
Rookie list
Marc Dragicevic – Delisted and redrafted as a rookie for 2004. Has 46 games to his name, but injuries have curtailed him. Crucial year as he looks to be elevated in 2004.
Kelvin Moore – Promising defender who gains a second year on the rookie list. Will continue developing via the VFL in 2004 with a view to be promoted onto the senior list.
Nathan Foley – Promising midfielder entering his first year in the AFL system after having a great year in the TAC Cup. Will further his development via the VFL in 2004.
