The rules were changed for the 2006 draft and its 16.5 points or less. Thats 4 wins or less.

4 wins and a draw and 18 points does not qualify for a 2nd round PP in 1 year. 18 points in each of 2 years does not qualify for a 1st round PP unlike in the past.

So its been reduced from 18.5 points to 16.5 points and its a 2nd rounder each year and a 1st rounder if you do it over 2 years. The 2 year one is not cumulative so if you win 1 and then 5 in the last 2 years it wont count. Its 16.5 points in both the 2 years.

So if Richmond finish on 3 and a half wins they get a pick 17 extra. If they finish on 18 points and 4 and a half wins they get no extra pick. So if they do then the whole tanking debate can be brought up next year when if you do it again the pick goes from 17 to 1 as a bonus.

16.5 points or less = a 2nd round PP taken before anyone else has a 2nd round pick.

I might be dumb but how does a team win 16.5 points?

I can understand 16 points = 4 wins or multiple draws but how do you win 0.5 of a point?

I think the .5 if just there to stop the 'draw' as it were Growl. They could have said 17 points and got the same result though.

Be fair to say if we get a priority ppick next year terry will be sunning with me in bali before the season is over

Awesome isnt it, you finish bottom of the ladder and you still dont get No.1 pick :cutelaugh :-[

Its not all bad i guess, but carlton need to be delisted from the afl.

Totally agree Jason. They are just a bunch of *smile*.

I posted the below on a thread in Dyer-tribe as a suggestion.

If the AFL are to keep the priority pick, I have a suggestion for them.
In the case of this year (assuming Carlton loses).
Richmond is last they have pick 1
Carlton is second last, they have pick 2 (priority) & pick 3 (second last placing)
Melbourne have pick 4 & so on up the ladder.
My point being that if you qualify for the priority pick for a second year, you get the pick in the place you finished. Something that won't be a huge change but something that would rid the AFL of the stupid situation where a team that finishes last doesn't end up with pick 1. Just an idea, though the AFL probably don't give a sh!t anyway.
If this has been suggested before, apologies.

How about the priority pick in the 2nd year comes in after the clubs who didn't make the finals. Start of the draft for 3 years in a row.
So this year it would be

1. Richmond
2. Carlton
3. Melbourne
4. Bulldogs
5. Essendon
6. Fremantle
7. Brisbane
8. StKilda
9. Carlton

etc

That's about the best system to avoid tanking. I also think it has to be done on the number of years outside the finals. I think that number should be four years btw.

One idea I've thought about for avoiding the tanking is that the draft position should be decided on the basis of the ladder after round 15 and priority selections on the number of wins at the time.

Round 15 is a good deadline because all teams have played each other once by then. Tanking is seldom rumoured in the rounds prior to that.

It also means that teams are not so much disadvantaged or otherwise by the draw. There is a still a distortion based on travel but the issue of how often you played the spooner is eliminated.

It takes the tanking smell out of the finals leadup, too. That'd be a PR win. And it means that sides, irrespective f how lowly they are can throw everything at the back end of the season to improve their momentum (read marketability) going into the next season.

This is by no means a perfect solution but it limits the tanking debate to round 15 - not many pull the plug by then - and is IMO fairer in terms of draw.

One downside is that a side might win the Premiership and yet win selection #13 in the ND. I'm okay with that but some might freak.

Another is that it might look like the AFL has conceded that the draw is unfair. But this IMO is easier to spin than the current tanking stink.

i'm glad that week is nowhere near exams ;D

Well, I guess my week at Uni between the 8th and the 12th will be pretty non-existant then!

Something needs to be done to compensate teams finishing around 9th. Right now that is the worst spot you can finish and we are a prime example of what good it does.

You work hard but just miss the finals and then get a kick in the nuts with an average 1st round pick. Nice job Andy D and the AFL.

Yes can see it now. The AFL changes the rules to give the team finishing 9th priority picks and thus ensuring we never finish 9th again
