Grand Tribute to the Greatest Tiger of them all
10:28:31 AM Tue 26 August, 2003
The Richmond Football Club wishes to advise that details of Jack Dyer's funeral service have now been finalised following discussions with Jack's family yesterday.
The funeral will take place at St Ignatius Church (Church Street, Richmond) at 10am this Wednesday (August 27) followed by a
celebration of Jack's life at Punt Road Oval. According to Jack's family, this is exactly how 'Captain Blood' would have wanted it -- at his old school, and then his beloved Tigerland, with members of the Yellow and Black faith.
The MCG carpark near the Punt Road entrance will be open from 9am Wednesday for those attending the funeral (normal parking rates apply). St Ignatius holds about 800 people, so space inside, understandably, will be tight. A special area will be allocated at the front of the church for Jack's family, closest friends, former Tiger teammates, officials and current RFC personnel. For those who can't fit into the church, the Club is hoping to organise some outside speakers to broadcast the service to them.
The service will finish at approximately 11am and everyone is invited back to Punt Road Oval for the celebration of Jack's life. At around 11.30am the funeral cortege will make its way past Punt Road Oval (via Church Street and Swan Street) for a final farewell to the most famous Tiger of them all.
Inside the ground there will be a sausage sizzle for fans, drinks available at bar prices, music from Jack's era and a wonderful opportunity to reminisce about a wonderful man who has meant so much to the Richmond Football Club -- and Australian Football in general. Upstairs in the Social Club there will be a private wake for Jack.
At approximately 1.30pm, the Club will ask everyone to join Jack's family on the ground for a special ceremony, culminating in the release of 312 (Captain Blood's games tally) Yellow and Black balloons and a rousing rendition of the Tigers' theme song.
All proceeds from the day will be donated to the Jack Dyer Foundation.
There will be further updates throughout the week on the Club's tribute plans for Jack at this Sunday's final home-and-away round match against Hawthorn at the MCG.
