I was 11-years old back in 1969 when my Dad, former Richmond full forward Jack O'Rourke, took me to the Dyer house in Docker Street Richmond to meet the famous Jack Dyer.
We had come down from Warrnambool to watch the mighty Tigers play on the Saturday and stayed with my grandmother, Dad's Mum in Longfield St Richmond. On the Sunday morning we called into Jack's house and there he and his wife Sybil welcomed us in for a cup of tea.
I had heard so much from my Dad about this most famous of all Tigers and it was indeed a privilege to meet him. My Dad had told me so much about Jack who coached him at Richmond and whom he worked for and with Ray Horwood at the Tiger Milk Bar. The songs they used to sing and parties they had whilst playing... it must have been a fabulous time to play for the Tigers.
On another occasion Jack Dyer invited us to attend World of Sport at Channel Seven in Dorcas Street South Melbourne. There I was able to view the handball live, with Polly Farmer firing bulls eyes like it was as easy as shelling peas.
I have seen old pholographs of my Dad in his playing days and one particular one where Dad, Roy Wright, Des Rowe and Ray Poulter and co. are looking up in awe of the great man as he was speaking to the team. I know my Dad idolised Jack Dyer and had the greatest of respect for him.
It was a sad day to hear 'Captain Blood' had passed away as it seems all the special people of Richmond the people who have helped to establish Richmond as different from the rest - GR included - have moved on to another world. I know the Richmond spirit will live on through the new generations, however, men like Jack Dyer will never be forgotton. A true legend.
The famous old ground Punt Road where my Dad took the mark of the year in 1951 over Collingwood full-back Jack Hamilton and where Captain Blood made his name should be renamed the Jack Dyer Oval.

I consider myself lucky to have actually seen the players mentioned in action and that mark O'Rourke took!
