Hawthorn star Cyril Rioli retires from AFL football at age 28

A great of the game, all the best to Cyril and his family.

Edit

Thanks Cyril for $17 I got on you to win the Norm Smith Medal :clap

Just heard.

Family bigger than the game.

One of my favourite opposition players I liked watching ( not against us ) who one day destroyed us with I think 5 plus goals at the G? Could have been more.

All the best champ.

Done it all. Won a GF from his freakish play !

What a fabulous player Cyril was for Hawthorn.
I hope young Daniel lights up the MCG this friday night as a tribute.

Time to go back home
Family is more important than this game
Thanks u r a great role model for every afl player

Bruce will need a new love child to call now.
“His got it, his got it, his got another goal. Oh Rioli, delicious “
“Richo we need more tissues”

Yep, and what a family of champions. All the best to Cyril.

A legend of the modern game and on all accounts I've heard, a top bloke too, generous with time for his fans.

Congrats on an outstanding playing career. Hopefully he stays involved in the development and coaching side of the game.

Just want to add.

Re-defined the small forwards role which our 3 amigos base their game on.

Pressure
Tackling
Spectacular marks
Goals
Assists
Perceived pressure.

One of those players who you would go or watch the footy just to see him in his element. Great player, honestly sad to see him retire early, but there is more to life than footy.

Just realised he’s only played 11 games for 2017/18.

28 is young to retire. I wonder if we really have seen the last of him.....

Anyone know the exact reason why? I keep hearing "Family" issues

the short answer is no. and neither should we.

but the facts are, hes been a long way from home since he was 14, and his dad had a heart attack late last year.

I imagine its just his time to go home.

Yep. One of the few players who could tear a game open with only a handful of possessions or a couple of massive moments. Lots of fun to watch as long as it wasn't against us.

Way to young to be retiring, but what else is there for him to achieve? Got four Dingly danglies, got a Normie, got recognition as a magical player. Family way more important than playing another year or two n he's been a long time away from home.

Dare its as simple as this.

Hes achieved everything in senior footy 4 flags playing in a Great Dynasty for the Hawthorn FC.

Injuries starting to get him, and his team is not going to threaten whilst he can still play.

Not interested in pointless cold winters and pre seasons anymore, family more important.

Just want to go back home and enjoy his people and his home land and his heritage as he stated doing the things he loves fishing, hunting etc.

Has done it all Cyril great player amazing and a proper bloke too humble and approachable.

Good luck to him thanks for the memories yes a fave of mine even though he was never a Tiger.

A great mentor hes been for our very own Daniel also dont fiorget.

Cant blame him for hanging em up.

Cheers Cyril
