Question… I thought the AFL put a stop to interstate teams buying home games off Melbourne clubs? I remember when Norf sold games to Sydney and Melbourne sold games to Brisbane. I’m sure there are other examples PRE punters can provide.
Anyway, I have a massive, massive issue with Norf selling 2 home games to the WA teams.
You know what the cause of this is? Gather Round. Let me explain why...
The WA clubs have been pretty vocal about being forced to play an extra away game coz of Gather Round. They think it’s unfair for them because of the travel, etc, etc.
Once this Norf deal goes through, both WA teams and both SA teams will receive 12 home games (I am assuming Eagles and Dockers members will receive home game rights as part of this deal). This is a massive, massive advantage…
But if you try to raise this argument with supporters of those teams, they will just push their ridiculously ignorant “Vicbias” agenda about how hard they have it because they have to travel 10 times per season.
If Gather Round doesn’t exist, Port likely misses out on top 2 this year. One day a team will miss out on the 8 or the top 4 because a WA or SA team received that extra home game. It’s not right.
From a Richmond POV, its worse for us because we only get 10 home games at the MCG. We are so disadvantaged, it’s a joke.
The critics (ie. Cornes and his ilk) will always argue that we also play away games at the MCG. But since Gather Round started, the total amount of games we’ve play at the MCG has been the same as what the Power and Crows play at Adelaide Oval… The main difference is that we play far more neutral games than them. This is where we get screwed.
In conclusion, Gather Round needs to go!! Interstate teams buying games off vulnerable Melbourne clubs needs to be banned!!
