Some info I got in an e-mail.
Richmond has apparently just announced it's picking up Thomas Roach under
the father-son rule, here is some information on him from Damian Streets:
Thomas Roach is a promising midfielder. He is a little like Bowden or
Campbell in that he plays quite well as an inside midfielder, but is more
an outside player by nature, one without great pace. He has OK pace, just
not speedster quality, and is deceptively good overhead for his size. He
reminds me a little of Chris Newman allthough not quite as quick. Roach is
very very smart. He runs to good positions on the ground, switches play
and changes direction and makes interceptions from opposition kick-ins. He
is the kind of player who gets better when he is surrounded by good players
because he likes to bring teammates into the game. Very good footy smarts,
quite good athleticism.
He divides his time between the centre and the half-forward line. He can
take a mark in the forward line. I suppose he plays a little like
Dragicevic or Rogers in that way. He is a good kick for goal, and likes to
get 1 or 2 a game. He is also quite good at getting clearances from packs,
and I have seen him get 3-4 centre clearances in a row. By nature he
prefers to run ahead of the play and operate forward of centre.
Last year he came into the Oakleigh Chargers at this time of the year. Put
a string of good games together and starred in their finals campaign. He
marked himself down as one to watch. This year he started poorly then hurt
his shoulder and missed some football. He then played mostly school footy
with only a couple of cameos at Oakleigh. He has been slow to get up to
speed when he stepped up from school footy to the under-18s, but has begun
to show a little bit of form. Last week he hurt a hamstring or calf while
running in to kick a goal, but continued (quite funny actually 30 metres
out directly in front, the hammy went, he kicked it right-angles out on the
full). Might have just been cramp.
The timing is very odd. This week he plays against Calder, the best team
in the comp. He will probably go head to head with the best centreman in
Victoria (Brock McLean) and I would have thought it prudent to wait for
that game. I don't think Roach has shown enough yet to be naming him as a
father-son pick. He has talent, but I would have thought he was on the
fringes of the draft at the moment. I would have waited to see his last 3
games and see how he performs in the testing at the draft camp. Naming him
this early is rather pointless. Also locks up the 3rd round draft pick
meaning we can't trade it.
I'd say he was a 4th or 5th rounder taken in the 3rd round. As the ladder
stands now we are giving up pick 35 for him which is a little high. I
would have thought 50-60 would be better.
For those who would like to forever claim that they knew all about him
before he came to Richmond, you can see him play Saturday. There is a big
under-18 double header at Oakleigh. Oakleigh-Calder at 10.45, followed by
Gippsland v Murray at 1.30pm. Calder and Murray are the best 2 teams in
the comp and should provide 10-12 draft picks between them.

Damian Streets
