EON Sports Radio launched by celebrity manager Glenn Wheatley
NUI TE KOHA, July 20, 2016 6:12pm
CELEBRITY manager Glenn Wheatley has launched a national 24-hour sports radio station in Melbourne.
Wheatley, who manages John Farnham, and instigated Australia’s first FM station 36 years ago, flicked the on-switch at EON Sports Radio late today.
“I love sport and I love radio,” Wheatley, EON’s chief executive, told Confidential. “I think there was a gap in the market that needed to be filled. It was so obvious; a logical step.”
EON, which was also the name of Wheatley’s FM station in 1980, also introduced its on-air talent, including retired netball star Bianca Chatfield and former Socceroo Josh Kennedy.
Chatfield, who will co-host EON’s breakfast show, said it was her first actual job. “It’s about time I got into the real world,” she said, laughing. “I’m excited for the opportunity.”
EON will broadcast EPL, A-League, NBL and FA Cup matches as part of its live schedule. It is working on AFL coverage. “We’re talking to the various rights owners. There’s a chance we can pick up at least game a week in the interim,” Wheatley said. “And because we’re national and digital, I think we have a very good chance of picking up more.”
Asked how EON views the popular sport station SEN, Wheatley said: “I see all radio as competitors. SEN is a competitor. But we can’t be looking over our shoulder. We have to look forward. Unfortunately for them, we are going to do it better.”
Before speaking at the EON launch, Wheatley played New Kid In Town, by The Eagles, and Farnham’s Playing To Win, as his entrance music.
It is hoped he didn’t bring EON’s cheesy 1980 playlist to the 2016 digital radio station.
