I remember in 1980 having my first duffel coat. For those old enough, it used to be the trend of buying a duffel coat and having the players name on the back, having badges on the front and name bands on the arms and all those Official Richmond Cheer Squard sew on badges.

Yes, I was a member of the Richmond Cheer Squad.

I had Emmett 5 Dunne on the back.

The coat was black, but covered in yellow writing.

My brother used to have Mark 1 Lee on the back, in 1980. Then at the towards the end of 1982, he stayed up all night removing Mark 1 Lee and replaced it with Brian 21 Taylor, only for Taylor to transfer to Collingwood the following year (end of 83).

I'd love to see the return of the Duffel coat. It was a great trend

I had Jim 20 Jess on the back with the little names down the sleeves.I even had the I Hate Collingwood Etc....badges of all 11 clubs pinned down the front. The sad thing is I still have it.

I had Geoff Raines No. 4 on my duffel coat. Michael Roach no. 8 on one pocket & i think Barry Rowlings on the other. I had a few player badges as well. I used to have a badge that read i hate 2 things Collingwood and J.R. as the show Dallas was huge back then.

Well after i think '82 i had to try and remove the no. 4 off the back, what a nightmare that was it just wouldn't come off. Aah the old duffel coat, bring it back doesn't fashion do a recycle say every 20 years. Well its time.

My duffel coat had Disco Roach on the back. ALso had the names down the sleeves as well as a One eyed Tiger badge which had two eyes, one being shut. Used to also pin those badges on with the ruffles and ribbons, like I was a first placed prize bull. lol

I still have it too somewhere and I should maybe loan it to the museum.

yesterday I bought a packet of unopened name tags from a collectable shop in Prahan.

geez it brings back memories.

we may have to reintroduce the duffle coat this year.

lets get the trend happening again

Yes I had a duffle coat also - with a number 5 on the back.
And the players names down my sleeves.

One of my earliest and most vivid memories of football was walking around inside the MCG one game day with my parents whilst wearing my coat. We must have just walked past the entrance the players came in. I remember getting a pat on the back and hearing a voice say "great number you have on your coat there son" - Rexy sure looked taller and thinner back then, with a bit more hair on the top - not sure if he was into kissing fish by that stage!!

GO TIGERS!!

Now this is a memory. As a young fella about 8 or 9 Mum just bought me a duffle coat for school. What she did'nt know was that the day after she bought it, I took it down to the local sports shop and got them to iron on in bright gold letters MAURICE RIOLI with a big number 17 on the back. Needless to say my mum was mortified. Not just because I'd done it without her permission but because it was completely crooked, slopping to the left from memory. But I didn't care. I wore it proudly to school the next day, showing it off to my Carlscum friend who had Ken Hunter plastered across his back as well. It'd be great to bring back the dufflecoat.

ah the memories hey i had 'the flea's' number on the back and his name then got my mum to put yellow trim alround the outsides of the jacket..

thought i was the ants pants 8)

by the time it was finished it was covered completely in tigers stuff with badges and all that...

long live the old duffel coat at least they kept you warm...

I never had a duffel coat myself, but I had this mate who was a mad keen Jimmy Jess fan. He had RFC stuff all over the coat, but most prominent was No 20, The Ghost. One night he went down to training and Jess was injured so wasn't participating. He's sitting there watching and all of sudden hears this slow drawl "Ya like me, do ya?"
My mate looked up into the bearded face of his hero and nodded wordlessly.
Jimmy said "I'll tell ya what. I'm not supposed to do this, but if you can hang around until training is finished I'll take you into the rooms and let you meet the fellas."
What a bloke! He made my mates dream come true. Sadly I doubt anyone would do that these days.

Ah the duffle coat. Remember buying my black duffle coat in a shop along Bridge Rd in 1981.
Lot's of preparation went into the design. I had Dale Weightman on the back and the arms were decorated in those small name tags.

I met Dale Weightman outside the Richmond clubrooms before a game and he signed the number. 22 years later, I met "Flea" outside the same clubrooms. We had arranged to meet before a game so he could escort me into the rooms and watch the Tigers prepare for a big match.

Thanks "Flea"...You're a Legend.

I remember a guy I used to work with always crapped on about his "Duffle Coat" but I had no idea what he was talking about until he bought it into work one day. It had disco on the back. Wise choice.

I loved my duffel coat like no other item of clothing.
Maurice

Worn over my Michael Roach jumper to school on Mondays if we won. Otherwise, just worn to school every day.

i reckon its time the duffel coat made a comeback...something the RFC could look into as a marketing tool for the club to raise some cash seems a lot of ex-tigers supporters have great memories of them....reintroduce them as a exclusive for tigers supporters or members...slightly more tailored to-days fashion...great for those cold winter days.... ;D

I agree, but the thing I think is most obvious is that the duffel coat was warm.

It has a great tradition in football, and I think with some of the other fashions making a comeback I wouldn't be too suprised if the DUFFEL returned.

Aah Hopper. Maurice was some special player. I too wore his number proudly on my black coat. If the Duffel does make a return, I think young Tambling's might adorn the back's of some youngsters the same way "Mr Magic" did in our day.

Used to love the big wooden toggles that would button up the Duffel, and that stench it would give off after it was thrown on the cupboard, wet, after a shellacking.
I inherited my older sisters duffel, when she considered it no longer cool to wear, and put the No 17 on the back. Yes, Maurice Rioli was the master. :clap

Ah' loved the 'ole d/coat, can't remember the first number I had on the back.. I do remember 14 Ross Warner, 24 Billy Barrot, &4 Royce Hart.. if I had one now it would be Richo & Cogs.
  'Go Tiges'  :thumbsup :tigerhead

Never had a duffel coat, but sure did want one.
My lot was left to the old long sleve jumper with '33' stitched on. I was a big David Cloke fan then... but never wore the jumper again after he left for the Wobblers... hated him! (And still didnt fully warm to him when he returned).

There is actually a Richmond duffel coat in the Melbourne museum, fair dinkum. I think it has Cloke on the back. Its part of a very good Melbourne culture display.

The duffel coat itself has actually made a fashion comeback. I've noticed quite a few young Japanes trendy-looking types wearing traditional black duffel coats. Be good to see 'em back.
