One of the guys who is in a Tigers e-mail loop with me at work is putting together a one-a-day player critique starting at #1 and working through the player list. It's a pretty good read so I thought I would share it with you.

Part 27 in the series….

28 - Kane Johnson

Position: Midfielder
Age: 24, turns 25 a fortnight before Round 1.
Height: 186cm
Weight: 84kg
Career Games: 104 (0 at Richmond)
Career Goals: 44 (0 at Richmond)
Draft History: Selection 27 in the 1995 National Draft, traded by Adelaide to
Richmond in 2002 Draft for Selections 2,18,32 & Torney with Adelaide also
coughing up selections 12, 28 & 41 in a deal designed to get Wayne Carey to
Adelaide.

2002 Averages: 20 games, 13.4 Kicks, 4.1 Marks, 10 Handballs, 0.55 Goals,
1.55 Tackle, 1.7 Rebounds, 4.6 Inside 50s, 4.7 Clearance, 1.5 Clangers

2002 Summary: Went up a level in 2002, finishing equal 6th in the Crows B&F.
Part of a gun midfield rotation that included McLeod, Goodwin, Ricciuto,
Edwards, Bode & Ladhams. Was third at Adelaide for Handballs, fifth for Inside
50s and fourth for Hard ball gets. Only three times failed to gain 20+ touches out
of the 20 games (Twice v Port, 19 & 12, the other was the Prelim v
Collingwood). Twice over 30 touches. Was the first year he took a real
consistent role as a major ball winner in the middle for the Crows which is a big
wrap in itself having previously been often the run-with player, or playing off a
flank or the wing.

Previously: Was All-Australian at U18 level, playing as a key defender
(primarily). Started at Crows as a run-with player, half back flanker. Averaged
16.5 touches per game in 2001 from 18 games, 15 touches from 15 games in
2000, 16.5 from 15 in 2000, 13 from 12 in 98, 14.5 from 23 in 97. Two games in
debut year 1996. Was highly regarded from his time at Adelaide as having the
class, hardness, discipline and ability to perform pretty much any role through
the midfield.

Ability: 8 - Most of my memories of Johnson as an Adelaide player are of class
and ability to do the right things at the right time.

Offence: 6 - Maybe a bit of blind faith here, as to some extent a possible failing
of his previously has been his offensive side, but he's certainly improved in this
aspect over the last couple of years at Adelaide, and I think that's a reflection of
his changing role at the club. Certainly has all the attributes now to be a better
than average attacking option.

Defence: 7 - Regularly played a run-with role for the Crows as the midfielder
sent out to keep an opponent quiet while continuing to win the ball himself. Is
more than capable of playing at half-back and regularly was there with Adelaide.

Hardness: 6.5 - Again above average in this respect, is strong at the contest
and if anything judging by little we've seen in 2003 has improved in this
department yet again. I do find it a bit difficult to judge opposition players in this
category, not seeing them week-in/week-out. Is capable of absorbing physical
pressure as well as giving it out. Has probably moved more towards an
harder "inside" player over the last couple of years, I think after watching him
more often and a lot closer as a Richmond player than I would have as an
Adelaide player I can see me reassessing this one up.

Speed: 6 - I rate him above average in this category, but I'm thinking he's
dropped off a little bit since his earlier days where I tend to recall him being even
quicker. Might be just a perception.

Stamina: 7 - Well above average, can't recall ever seeing Johnson struggling
towards the end of games, and he certainly can cover a fair bit of distance.
Another factor that'll be more accurately assessed after watching him week-in
week-out live.

Delivery: 7.5 - Delivers the footy with penetration and good precision. This is
one area I definitely think Johnson has improved since his earlier days at the
Crows. I thought earlier than while his delivery always looked pretty good, he
was prone to turnovers at times, but watching games he played last year he
really was exceptional in his decision-making and ability to control the footy.

Air: 6.5 - Well above average, particularly for a midfield type. Is deceptively
strong in the air, holds his ground well in a contest, will spoil when caught
behind and reliable hands when out wide.

Ground: 8 - Knows where to go to get the footy, is good in close at the contest.

Injury: 4 - The big concern and one of my reasons for questioning the "cost" we
paid at the trading table. Not so much of a case of the big nasty injuries, just
constant soft-tissue injuries. The sort of guy who seems to always miss a few
games a year.

Temperament: 9 - The more I looked into Johnson, the more I kept hearing the
words, "Disciplined", "Team-Oriented", "Coachable". I had thought of him as
having a good temperament, the closer I looked the more I think this is a very big
part of his make-up. Possibly the biggest gain Richmond gets from Johnson is a
quality role-model.

Ball: 9 - Went from being above average in 2001 to exceptional in this regard in
2002. Averaged more disposals than our best (Campbell & Bowden) last year.

Strengths: Strong at the contest, very classy with the football smarts to do the
right things at the right time. Has constantly improved in most areas and
excelled in a variety of roles being a very well rounded player. Is a good runner
with the footy and has polished hand and foot skills. Has very few
weaknesses having worked constantly hard at improving his weaker areas. Is
difficult to "exploit" as a player.

Weaknesses: Never been a big goal kicker, although has often played roles
which negated his opportunities. A constant stream of injuries means he's off
the park way too often.

Overall: Let's preface this by saying Johnson is very, very good, but he's not
the Messiah unfortunately. Looking through his career I've really got the
impression we are looking at a player who has constantly improved and
consistently was a class act as a "Role Player". To use a movie analogy he's
been a Best-Supporting character actor who finally took a lead role last year,
but wasn't quite good enough to get the Oscar Nomination. Outside his 6th in
the B&F last year I don't believe he'd ever finished in their top 10 before. It
should be remember though that Adelaide have a very strong midfield - and
while playing a significant role there is a big wrap in itself, it will be interesting to
see how he goes at Richmond where there is a lot less ability around him.
When people have talked about him Temperament & Discipline are constantly
mentioned. Had 2 premierships before he was 21, has pace and is good in
traffic - will be a rarity at Richmond as a well-rounded player who can attack,
defend, win lots of the ball and keep his own man quiet. The great thing
Johnson brings is the ability to take the heat of Coughlan in particular and to
provide him with a genuine role-model, it will also allow other midfielders to take
more risks and more opportunities against lesser players. Also gives Frawley a
chance to genuinely pitch our midfield one on one against the majority of sides
(but not the top ones).

What he needs to do?
1) Keep his body together, we don't want Johnson playing 15-17 games a
year, we need 22.
2) Play "Big Brother" to Coughlan.
3) Target 20 goals in a season (previous best 15 in 2000), would be nice to
have a goal kicking midfielder.

Overall: ... Johnson is very, very good, but he's not
the Messiah...

... it will be interesting to see how he goes at Richmond where there is a lot less ability around him.

I was wondering about this as I was reading OMHF's summary.

Now that Kane will be playing a leading role, I'll be interested to see how he handles the new found fame and the different pressure.

The great thing Johnson brings is the ability to take the heat of Coughlan in particular and to provide him with a genuine role-model,

2)  Play "Big Brother" to Coughlan.

Spot on OMHF.

needs more help in the midfield aswell as coughlan, most good teams have 7 or 8 players they can rotate through the middle we have 4 maybe 5, puts too much expectation on players like johnson.

well done jono good year considering what you had to put up with

Yeah he had a top year, better than i expected. Many games he was more damaging than Cogs IMO.As PRR says we need1/2 a dozen gooduns.
With Brown joining the midfield and either Rodan(i doubt) or Newman stepping up along with Blumfield we're finally getting a midfield that can match the better clubs.
