One of the guys who is in a Tigers e-mail loop with me at work is putting together a one-a-day player critique starting at #1 and working through the player list. It's a pretty good read so I thought I would share it with you.

Part 21 in the series….

22 - Craig Biddescome
Position: Half Back / Wing
Age: 26, turns 27 Grand Final Week.
Height: 185cm
Weight: 84kg
Career Games: 70 ( 36 at Richmond)
Career Goals: 11 ( 5 at Richmond)

Draft History: Taken selection 59 in 1993 National Draft by Geelong (their last
selection). Of interest only he and Grant Tanner (selection 55 - 69 games)
actually played a game for the Cats from that draft. Was traded as a bit player in
the deal that got Hilton to Richmond, despite what it looks like on Record he
wasn't traded directly for a first round pick.

2002 Averages: 3 games, 3.7 Kicks, 1 Marks, 2.3 Handballs, 0 Goals, 1.6
Tackles, 1.3 Rebounds, 0.3 Inside 50s, 0.3 Clearance, 1.3 Clangers

2002 Summary: 3 games, some would say 3 too many. Was ordinary when in
the side, but played some reasonably footy for Coburg without being
outstanding there. Showed nothing at either level to suggest he'll be doing
anything other than play out his overly generous contract.

Previously: Didn't play a game in his first season (94), and got a couple
of "encouragement" games late in 95 without doing anything of note. Then had a
good development year in 96, playing 10 games, gaining a Norwich Rising Star
nomination, averaging 11 disposals.  Was expected to keep improving but went
backwards badly in 97 & 98 and Geelong took the opportunity to slip him off to
Tigerland.  Did little in his first season, even though he showed some signs he
might be handy. Then produced a "career" year in 2000 where he averaged
almost 17 possessions a game and provided good run off a half back flank and
managed 12th in Richmond's B&F.  Managed to translate that into a generous 3
year contract. Dropped off in 2001 where he started to get shown up for a lack
of class and then suffered a knee injury which essentially ended his year.

Ability: 1.5 - Well below average, is not great with the footy in his hand and
panicky with it in front of him. Poor at choosing options he never really has
shown much outside one average season.
Offence: 2 - Very little attacking capabilities, has never shown a great ability to
kick goals and has completely lost any ability to run off his man he may have
had.
Defence: 3 - Can't be relied upon to keep a player quite, is easily beaten in a one
on one contest, was primarily used in defence as a running option, rather than a
negating option and is rarely accountable.
Hardness: 2.5 - Never, ever looked like it in this category.
Speed: 5.5 - Never sheer pace but was reasonable. Leg injuries have probably
contributed to a drop-off and he's in danger of this becoming another problem
area.
Stamina: 6 - Always appeared a reasonable runner who could keep going
without really standing out as a top-line runner.
Delivery: 4 - Below average, not our worst, but part of that group.
Air: 3 - When he was on song, was reasonably capably of holding marks, but
took most of them well clear of opponents. is not overly strong in the air and
poor in a contest.
Ground: 4.5 - Reasonable with the ball on the ground, but panicky when there is
pressure on and ordinary in close.
Injury: 3 - Has had a fair few injuries, missing games in pretty much most years,
predominately leg related.
Ruck: 0 - I would love to see him contest a ruck contest - I think he'd panic on
the play station version.
Temperament: 4 - Struggles under pressure, doesn't look like a dummy spitter
though.

Re: Daily Player reviews #22 Craig Bibbescombe

Ball: 4.5 - Is capable of racking up decent possession numbers, but playing the
loose roles he does he should.
Strengths: Is supposed to be a good club man and he, er, ummmm.....
Reasonable runner, not a shocking kick.....

Weaknesses: Totally unaccountable for his direct opponent, easily beaten in a
contest, poor in close, can't handle body pressure, ordinary overhead, prone to
leg injuries.

Overall: Can't see any real point in making any in-depth analysis of Biddescome,
he's ordinary and a certain delisting at the end of the year, so I'll just start
ranting. I remember defending "Bidders" when he first came to Richmond, my
desperation to see decent running back flankers in Tiger colours had me
desperately thinking he may be able to fill that role. A reasonable season
ensued in 2000 and I thought if he could continue to make progress he might just
make a reasonable player. I was then stunned to find at the end of 2000 he was
threatening to leave the club unless he got a substantially upgraded contract. I'm
not privy to the amount, but I'm lead to believe it was pretty generous and we all
know it was for three years. Personally he lost me there and if I'd had a say he
would have been shown the nearest door. Richmond had given him a shot at an
AFL career and a single decent year was worthy of another 2 year contract
with slight upgrade, nothing more. He's supposed to be a good club man, but I
couldn't give a rats if he can tell a good joke or organise a good end of year
drinking session, he's an below average footballer playing a position that's for
dime-a-dozen blokes. Genuine good clubmen are guys like the Kellaway's, the
Chris Bond's who put more into a club than they take out, Biddescome is a long
way to the other end of the scale. Along with Houlihan wil be l vying for the
coveted position of loose man in Coburg's defence - a position which he can do
very well with, but would get exploited at AFL level. Was found out after 2000
and a small amount of physical pressure saw him fall to pieces. Is tying up
valuable salary cap $$'s and a list position.

What he needs to do?
1) Go see his manager, the guy must be the greatest player agent outside of
Michael Arli$$ to have conned that last deal out of Richmond (then again he's
not the only one to do that lately) and if anyone can find him another job he can.
2) Make friends with the Coburg ladies who work the canteen - he can then get
the best scones.
3) Donate a framed copy of his contract to Richmond to be hung in the Football
Managers office to remind Tiger officials they should have some concept of
duty of care to long-suffering Richmond supporters.

I was amazed at the arrogance of Bidder asking for more money when he hadn't done a thing. I was more amazed that the club agreed to it.
Somehow it doesn't seem to ring true, and I'd like to think we haven't been given accurate info on his contract, rather than think we had officials who gave into unreasonable player demands.

We'd all like to think that Rosy, but after what happened with Gaspar, it just makes it a bit difficult to believe that.

I'm sure with Greg Miller there, these sorts of things won't be happening any more.

Do you know what happened with Gas, MC24? I know he got an extended contract. Was that at his insistance, or a club decision to save him being targeted in the West every time his contract was up?

The club said he accepted a lesser offer than he could have got elsewhere to stay at Tigerland, yet people always call him a mercenary.

I'd love to know the facts about Gas, cos I'd hate to think he's been wrongly maligned.

A massive difference here also is that Gas was an All Australian CHB and a much required player in our senior team, and also had a card up his sleeve that he was in demand in his home state.

Bidders isn't near our top 22, has done nothing for the club really and I doubt teams would have been queueing up for his services. I'd also love to know the details of Bidders' contract renewal because there is a distinct possibilty that we are way offline with what we think he was offered by the club as well.

Does anybody know the facts relating to these two guys contracts?

I basically know nothing about the ins and outs of any contracts.  All I know is what I read and hear, like most people I guess.

What struck me about the negotiations with Gaspar was that, apparently Darren wanted to stay with Richmond. Who knows how much influence player agents have on these negotiations, but I'm guessing some have more influence than others.  Given that he wanted to stay with us and if that was the case, then surely the Club had all the bargaining power they needed.  I then found it difficult to understand why the negotiations became so protracted.

I thought we were pretty naive the way we handled it and , basically, I think we got badly 'rolled' in the whole thing.  To then see that Fremantle was found to have breached the salary cap just added insult to injury.

Don't get me wrong.  I'm happy that Gaspar stayed, but I don't know if we needed to pay the price we did and perhaps not just in monetary terms.

I think without doubt the days of long drawn out & protracted contract negotiation at Richmond are well and truly over. All the players and their managers have a great respect for Greg Miller. This can only improve things I reckon.

Bidders at the time of his contract was coming off his best AFL season. I think he was offered a 2 year deal but his manager say no we want 3 years. As for the $ value who knows. They gave him the 3 year deal and he did his knee. He seems to be one of those players who after knee problems goes backwards instead of forwards.
