Coburg getting the Chop

Dont know if any of you guys heard Graeme Bond on 3AW last night, but he was talking about Carlton ending their partnership with the Bullants and said that he expects that Richmond will do the same with Coburg.

Apparently since Phil Cleary got involved again this year that there has been HUGE tension between the 2 parties. Richmond are looking at having their own reserves team again with them playing all Home games at Punt Road before the seniors.

I think this is a fantastic idea as you can get their early and watch our young kids going through their paces. Players can also be played in the positions that the senior coach wants to to be also. Apparently this has been a bit of a problem of late aslo.

I think giving Coburg the chop would be a positive move. It may save the clubs money to be affiliated with suburban VFL teams, but I don't think it helps with player development or game plan development.
The standard of "reserves" football has dropped dramtically since the good ol' days IMO. A lot of players are finding the gap to be very difficult to breach.

Running your own stand alone team is a VERY costlt excercise not to mention the fact that the club is forced to do the old ring around and get blokes to fill the breach when we have injuries.

A few years back, I am pretty sure the club had to get one of the office workers at Richmond to pull on the boots as they were short on numbers.

IMO, the club should do its best to keep the Coburg association going, as when it going well last season it was a great relationship, and as with all suburban clubs, they go thru peaks and troughs, so it is best to ride it out.

However I did enjoy watching the reserves play at Punt Rd back a few years.

Why is it that Collingwood and Hawthorn can makea go of it with their VFL affilated clubs but Carlton and now it seems Richmond can't?

Maybe Richmond needs to have more of a say in how Coburgs run.

Whatever they decide to do, I hope it's in the interests of the senior team rather than in the interests of a cuppla hundred grand.

I was talking to Cleary after the Legends game & he was looking forward to Coburg playing some home games at Punt Road as 'curtain raisers' to RFC MCG matches. Maybe that's all fallen through ?

I used to love the days when I would get to a match early and watch the Reserves before the main game. And seeing them in the yellow and black again would be fantastic. IMO whether your playing in the reserves or in the firsts, If your wearing the "Yellow and Black" you're playing for Richmond and it should make players proud just to run on the field with that jumper on. Any player worth his salt would always put in 110% if he had pride in the jumper and the club. How can you do that when your wearing something that looks almost like an Essendon strip and playing for a team called Coburg??

One Richmond, One Tigers, all grades.

Interesting - isn't Greg Miller on the Coburg board?

And Phil Cleary is a regular visitor to Punt road...

Tiga - I was watching the Werribee v Coburg game this year and my wife wandered in. She couldn't figure why I was barracking against the Tigers everytime Essendon kicked a goal. I dont know what the answer is but I hope the club make the best decision in the interest of developing a decent team.

I agree, Bulluss, it would be good seeing a "real" Richmond Twos team, in proper jumpers and on Punt Road. Makes it more meaningful for the spectators, too!

by going solo, it allows Richmond to develop the player how they see fit.

Currently, there are not too many young players delevoping the way they should be.

It would be costly, however, the devolopment would be well worth the costs. It would also have the senior and reserves coaching staff work better for Richmonds needs.

I would love to go and watch the reserved play before the seniors. That way it would give me a better chance to see how the younger players are going.

I'd say that's more due to the short lists, injuries, duds
that should have been pee-ed off last year anyway and the Coburg coach - and the fact that the senior coach
doesn't like to give young players a decent run in the
seniors.
... and reserves coaching staff work better for Richmonds needs.

The "reserves" coaching staff are Richmond staff. Paul Spargo is a Richmond assistant coach who just happens
to coach Coburg.
Contrast this with the last couple of years when Alan
Richardson was coach... a Coburg appointment.... and
the success and development that occured then.

I suppose it might get better next year - if the affiliation
remains - but if it doesn't it's going to cost heap big $$
which apparently the RFC don't have.

It remains to be seen what happens, but apparently
Phil Cleary is confident that the affiliation will remain and
Richmond have reported that they are happy with their
(Cleary & co's) current direction. But stranger things
have happed at sea.

Dead right BT. Phil has no intentions of breaking with the Tigers, however he does want them to recognise Coburg's history.

He also did tell me he is trying to work with Miller in organising Punt Road Games next year (ANZAC Weekend). However, it will always be coburg jumpers and coburg theme songs.

He got a bit miffed about the tigers theme song being sung last year at coburg games. Basically the money will keep coburg and tigers together.

Also he is working on special membership incentives for RFC members to join with the burgers too.

I think Phil's trying to work with Richmond within reason.

that is all..

The only thing Phil Cleary gives a damn about is Phil Cleary. Anyone who doesn't recognise this, I'd suggest you take a look at the recent debate and vote about whether Australia should become a Republic.

Phil didn't get his way, so he took his bat and ball and went home - stuff the team!

It's no coicnidence that when he stood for parliament he was an INDEPENDENT.

Phil's a living example of the old saying: "There's no 'I' in team - but there's an 'M' and an 'E'.

BTB, Richmond does not have a seconds side. Coburg is the FEEDER team for Richmond. Oh and isn't Greg Miller on the board at Coburg? mmmmmmmmm - yes, now I see.

CLEARYS intentions were evident from day one when he started talking about charging the RFC consultancy fees.

I commented on it at the time. If he had the interest of everyone at heart you would think he would be prepared to give a little bit for his so called beloved Coburg

I think the idea of a reserves Richmond side again is fantastic. I dont know the costs involved, but if they were to play on Punt Rd b4 senior matches, they would attract large crouds. Maybe THE largest in the VFL.
Throw a 2 or 3 dollar entry fee, and along with food, merchandise, etc.. surley it wouldnt be too expensive.
As it stands Richmond must put $$ into Coburg.
I say go it alone, and have a true feeder team, and playing on Punt rd would be excellent for the club and culture of Tigerland.

I don't know about the $2-3 charge. I'd assume the VFL sets attendance fees like most leagues do.

Maybe attendance could be written into Richmond memberships somehow though. It would be a pretty expensive day out, especially for a family to pay for reserves and the senior game as well.

I've posted before I think it would be great for a Coburg home game or two to be played at Punt Road.

I understand Coburg's need to keep their history, but it's a two way street. If Richmond weren't helping them out they'd be at risk of extinction anyway.

Yeah thats more what i meant and shouldve said rosy.
That for richmond members its a 2 or 3 dollar charge.
get alot more people there.
I firmly believe they should go it alone.

Would RFC consider such a move? Dollars aside, the logistics of fielding - what, another 25+ players - a second team could be scarey. I know they used to do it but would it still be feasible?

Thats just another one of the things the AFL stuffed up all clubs should have been allowed to keep at least their own senior and reserves teams, they have stuffed clubs ability to develop their own players abilities and club loyalty/culture. They charge clubs about $100,000 a year to keep their own magoos. And worst of all with the skinny playing lists and the requirement for all clubs to pay between 95% and 100% of the cap a lot of clubs are paying way over the top for a lot of players that are going around without really doing much or kids that may one day develop into good players before they actually make it.
