As president of the Chris Newman fan club, I'd reckon he has fitted into our defence superbly so far this season. A fine replacement for Torney with good skills and good awareness.

Go Chris :).

Yeah fair call mighty. He has really surprised me in the couple of matches I've seen of him this year. I didn't think he'd make the grade based on his form last year, but now I think i'll have to re-evaluate. Hope he continues his good form and hope he can add a bit of muscle over the coming years and develop into a really solid contributor. Seems to have a very level head for someone so young. Great poise and no Bowden-esque clangers kicking from the backline are also a plus.

If Torney continues his extraordinary form he should be shot.

I'm still undecided on Newman. He looks capable at times and always seems to take the ball grab below his knees but I haven't seen anything to suggest he'll be better than average. Perhaps he just needs more time but usually good players show signs early in their careers.

Definately worth persisting with in the backline though. Perhaps he should be encouraged to attack the ball more often and run up the ground or something.

I like the continual development of Newman MT and can see a bright future for him . :)

He seems to have a good skills, dosn't make to many poor decisions under pressure and is accountable to opponent, unlike some others we wont mention.

Given his reliability and hard work in our defence he can be assurred of a spot in the team.......and at the minute he deserves it.

has been impressed with him since the day he arrived to the club.he reminds me very much of a andrew mckay.
one of beck,s better efforts over the past 5yrs.

Agree with all of the above. Has a good frame, and is starting to work his way into games like Zantuck did last year. It always takes these blokes a while to actually believe they deserve to be there. If, by the end of the year, he has that belief, we'll have a player on our hands I believe.

I wrote a piece on TigerFury.net a few years back after I'd first seen him play in the magoos against Geelong. I was impressed then at his cool-head and hardness at the ball. I too likened him to a younger Andrew McKay.

I see him being one of those unobtrusive players who before you know it, have knocked up 200 games.

exactly TF.

I have always been a great rap for Chris for a few reasons;

;) Is physically strong and goes straight ahead
;) Is a great kick, which I don't think we have seen much of yet. I have seen him a training before slotting goals from all over the place. This will come with the afore mentioned confidence of playing games.
;) Accountable
;) A good footy brain and prepared to take a risk

In his TAC days he was the main rover for Dandenong, so he has that ability to move into the middle in a few years time.

Keep it up Chris ;) ;)

Yes, reminds me of ramunascaus aswell. Hope he gets a chance in the middle as a free-flowwing attacking middfielder. Looks very skillful, one of our better kicks, and shows alot of footy smarts. These are the types of players we need. There - something positive.

It's great to see Newman looking like he belongs out there he must have worked hard at training over the pre-season because he gets alot of game time (he helps his own cause by playing well when he gets a chance) but I think it's no coincidence that the two young blokes who have been given the most ground time last year and this year (Cogs and Newman) are now both reaping the rewards. Maybe we do have other young blokes that could make it even the maligned ones (cept maybe Vardy and Bidders) but they are just not managed properly in terms of game time and consecutive games in the ones etc. I can remember what it was like to get dragged and stay on the bench it hurts because you think you can help the team and you believe in your skills but you hold your chin up, then it happens again and again and that can be very disheartening. No wonder the young blokes lose self belief and confidence if they are good enough to be chosen in the ones the give them some decent game time and barring any major mistakes or whatever let them play a few weeks in a row, playing twenty minutes of footy in 3 games and then being dropped is no way to develop the kids.
I know it's a different era now and things must happen much more quickly but remember when Hawthorn sides of the eighties were invincible for so long? This was because their young kids more often than not played 70 to 100 games in the reserves before being blooded in the seniors. They were also helped with the culture of the club there at the time (success breeds success as we all know). Of course we can't do it like that now but I wonder how many times we could have done it in a 20 year period (let players develop lots in the 2's that is) with the names of some of our failed recruits in the past and later list sizes etc I guess not even that would have helped us.
Anyway weren't the coaches saying after the draft that the whole list/rookie list thing needs to be reviewed as there are too many young blokes not getting a chance to prove their wares at the elite level..?

good point TD. i remember the likes of tuck, dipper, dear all playing a very considerable time in the reserves before even getting a chance to play in the seniors.proof is in the pudding.but like you said times have changed and clubs can not afford to do that anymore mainly due to that salary cap and shorter lists.
as for the present system i believe the draft age should be lifted to 19.
*zones brought back in for each club
*out of that zone you can draft one kid [17] but he can not play in the seniors till he,s 19.

NO WAY!

That's how we started on the path of the financial mess of the 80's in the first place. Got a cr@p zone so we then had to poach players from other clubs or interstate after our premiership champions started retiring which ended up costing us $$$. Didn't have the most money to spend so we couldn't recruit the best players so we went nowhere fast on or off-field except towards a financial abyss.

I agree MT - zoning can really screw you over if you're in a dud area.

As for Newman, las year he proved his class, with his foot skills, and canny decision making.

Now he must become a top line midfielder. Can the coaching staff move him along?

Can he kick a goal?

im not saying the zone,s will be exclusive to one side but you can pick one player from that zone similar to father and son rule.
