Captain for next year....your thoughts

GOD ONLY KNOWS!!!! Seriously right now, I don't have a clue who should Captain the club come 2010.
A number of players could lay claim to the Captain and Vice Captain's role, but I have no doubt that right now none of them should be put into that situation.
I think the best solution is that all leadership positions in the club become vacant NOW.
During the pre season, the players are told point blank that their individual performances during the pre season, be they fitness, teamwork, discipline, skills etc will all be assessed and everyone is competing against their fellow team mate for a spot in the final 22. The Captain, Vice Captain, Senior Leadership Group, will then be selected based on the above.

Ben Cousins is an obvious candidate, but is not viable beyond a year or two. This is fine if he is fills in for the Chimp, giving TC a couple of years to get over his injuries and build himself up a bit more.
Here is the contentious part. I would throw down the challenge to Lids at the start of pre-season to earn the captaincy. If he has the mental strength, he will show it. If he doesn't it should go to Cuz. Simple as that.
But as Massai has said on countless occasions, a really hard military-style pre-season should sort out who is willing to lead the group.

I voted Lids as I think he is up to it and could come of age with captaincy responsibilities. I would have a co-captain in Cuz to show him how to be a good captain. They can then hand it over to the Chimp once he is ready to take it on in a few years.
Totally agree, a fine year from Newman even though he may have been a little naive at times. A good leader and one who will only grow as a captain given the time.One-eyed Tiger said:

I wouldve thought Deledio...but gee i dunno...i just dont know if he has the qualities required to do the job. I cant believe Cuz had to push Lids to the lead the players out...i mean that should be an honour...a TRUE leader would do all these things without a second thought.
Give it to the only guy with an ounce of leadership - Ben Cousins...

did anyone see see cuz grab hold of lids and push him to the front of the team as they were running back onto the ground to start the 2nd half
disagree - I think this is exactly what Lids needs. Did see the push last night on tv and laughed, but not for the reasons above, saw it differently.
We desperately need a leader on the field and it has to be from the next generation. Lets build a team around Lids cotchin etc

agree 100% plenty of $$$$$ has been offered from the lexus centre and that is a very strong rumor doing the rounds at the moment normally i dont buy into them but have heard it all week from alot of people not just pie supporters but from dons and ross people that a city based club with heaps of $$$$ and on the cusp of a flag are a bout to make a strong play for lids of richmond dont sign him soon
