Richmond skipper Wayne Campbell has been ruled out of the Tigers’ round ten clash with Sydney at the MCG on Saturday night after he failed to pass a fitness test on Friday morning.
Campbell was a surprise selection in the Richmond team on Thursday night, after he aggravated a calf injury that had sidelined him for a fortnight while playing against West Coast at Subiaco last week.
The tireless midfielder ran laps of Punt Road Oval before his teammates trained on Friday morning, and looked unimpeded before coach Danny Frawley said he would not play.
“You’ve got to put the teams in on Thursday night, but we wanted to wait and see what he was like this morning. He’s touch and go, but we decided to give him another week,” Frawley said.
“His form early in the year was first class, and you don’t like to see your skipper out.”
Richmond will promote one of Ray Hall, Kayne Pettifer or Craig Biddiscombe before the match at the MCG, depending on the weather conditions.
“We’ll wait and see what the conditions are like tomorrow night before making the decision on who’s coming in,” Frawley said.
The Tigers’ chief ruckman Greg Stafford and talented on-baller Mark Coughlan are poised to return to the side after training on Friday morning.
Stafford hyper-extended his knee in a match against Melbourne in round eight, and was sorely missed when West Coast defeated the Tigers by 52 points last Saturday night. Emerging star Coughlan also missed that match, after rolling his ankle during training the day before.
“They’ll really help our structures around the ball, and off course with Greg pushing forward as well. It gives us a lot of belief knowing we’ve got a fair structure back in place again,” Frawley said.
