I might go and figure out to build a house or a deck
I'm Sick of being a social worker
Does anyone know if I apply to uni, TAFE or do an apprenticeship?
Any guidance appreciated!

i'm not the least bit qualified to give accurate info on the topic ddt but in regards to tafe i don't think you do apprenticeships there. you are apprenticed elsewhere and attend tafe as part of your training. when i made enquiries about my son doing an electrical apprenticeship i was told it's best to attend a tafe pre-apprenticeship course because most companies get their apprentices through that system. not sure if the same applies to building though.

i have heaps of self-sufficiency kind of books related to building. still plan to build a mud brick/recycled product, shack up the back paddock of our farm one day.

jeez you must've had a bad day DDT!

I used to be a scientist until stats drove me nuts. I got a job as a builders labourer and learnt heaps on the job. didnt get any tickets, but I was over book learnin'. Just putting the finishing touches on my own house.

Its worth looking into TAFE courses DDT if looking at a building apprenticeship. I remember about 10yrs back, 1 year building course at TAFE took the first year off your apprenticeship and made you a little more attractive to take on as an apprentice having "some" experience.

However labouring as TGW said, you learn heaps and meet plenty of good people ...so someone would have a ticket and look over anything you need signing off on. ;D

DDT I made the exact change you are talking about 5 years ago. Best move I ever made. Great lifestyle and dramatic increase in income hasn't hurt either.

I was a youth worker working with D & A issues. The young people were fine, it was my colleagues that drove me crazy.

I reckon if you don't know anyone who could take you on as an apprentice your best bet would be to start a pre apprenticeship course at your local Tafe. I think they are 6 month courses and they get you out of your first year of school once you begin an apprenticeship.

A lot of builders get their apprentices from these courses because the teachers recommend the best students apparently. Who incidentally are more often than not mature agers.

Let me know if you need any info.

First of all DDT if your doing any work over $5000 in Victoria you need to be registered with the VBA. If you need any further info PM me as I know the procedure very well. By the way a course doesnt cut it mate.

Edit - just noticed you were up in QLD mate. The Building quals up there are different with the Building Authority.
