Robbie McGhie was a skinny mongrel who was the last top player to wear the no. 12 guernsey

Yes, and I believe the correct spelling of his name is Robert McGhie.

Using my Encyclopedia Of League Footballers as a reference,

"Played with Footscray 69-72 & 79, Richmond, 73-78 & South Melbourne 80-81.
A tall left footer who left Footscray as a result of disciplinary action and was snapped up by Tom Hafey who had a record for reforming rebels. He was CHB in successive premiership sides in his first 2 years at Richmond and had a solid career until crossing to Brunswick in 1978. He returned to Footscray then crossed to South ..."

My recollection was that he was about 193cms, and a tad under 90kgs. He wore tatts & a skinhead, but rarely played rough footy. He was fairly skinny for his height, and I think the image was a facade to deter his opponents from starting the rough stuff.
He was recruited because of our lack of a decent CHB at the time. (Rex was just too slow for CHB, as Walls had proved in the 72 GF.) McGhie was quicker & more skillful than Rex, and did well in his first 2 or 3 years, including 2 premierships. By 1976 his form had declined so significantly, I don't think we saw him in the Tiger seniors again.

Bones McGhie did the job that he was recruited for, and did it well. His son played TAC for the Western Jets in 2004, but was much much heavier & slower.

Yes, he wore the no.12

Always loved his beard, crew cut hair and tail.

Lean and mean was "Rough Robbie". Good player and great club man.

His image was quite the opposite to our more recent Bulldog import Nathan Brown.

I have a new (as in previously unread) copy of Tigerland signed by Robbie McGhie.

I loved Bones Mcgee-my best mate went to the footy with me primarily to watch the toughest looking footballer either of of us had seen to that point(and since)Agree with an earlier post-he was hard at it but not dirty-in fact I think he had a pretty clean record sheet. Apparently a bit of a funny guy off the track-his brother Stewie was a long time player at Footscray-I think he was a rover-and I always wondered how brothers could look so completely different. My signature moments of rugged Robbie were him running out of centrehalf back putting boot to ball with booming torps-if my memory serves me right-on his left foot(I stand to be corrected)

Stewie Magee is no relation to Robbie McGhie. Robbie did have a long raking left foot kick. I used to enjoy watching him play footy. :thumbsup

Yes he looked firece, like he'd just got out of jail , his body language backed up the looks , he rarely did any thing stupid on field ,
he had the capacity to lift when the side was flat, despite his skinny frame he took punishment impressively and dished out great bumps and tackles .
Kellaway like infront of a pack but was smart enough to be more like Hird sliding in from the side.
Was very good at knowing when to punch and when to mark, great boot on him as mentioned else where , got the big assigments .
For those that dismiss his toughness, it was a time of dirty players Diterich , Ron Andrews, Don Scott, Big Nichols, Neil Balme he didn't take back ward steps to anyone and nobody messed with Robbie McGee.

from what I can remember we definetely got the best of him ,

Remember him well. He was tough the way you want someone tougjh. Never shirked a contest always gave it all. Not an elite player and not the prettiest to watch but very effective. Had lots of tatoos on his arms which added to his appearance as an out and out mongrel but I never thought he really was that bad (Ricky McLean however. . . ;D).

Vividly remember a big punch up at the G against North one day involving McGhie. Doug Wade came steaming in from a long way away to clean Robbie up and Bones just saw him in time and ducked. Big Fat Doug went flying over him and landed face first in the ground having accomplished nothing but embarrassing himself and Bones went back to grappling with whoever it was he was saying "hi" to. My Dad and I laughed ourselves silly. (Never really liked Doug Wade.)

:rofl Now I know why Doug ended up with such a pug face.
