Justin Blumfield has a detached Rectus Femoris muscle in his thigh that requires an operation and will miss at least 6 weeks.

For all of those who are going to bag him and say he has been a dud recruit, save those judgements for a couple of years. There's plenty of good footy in him, he's just going through a bad patch with injuries.

That's a bummer for Blummer.
Hope he heals quickly and gets on the track again soon.
I want Essendon to be paying his salary while he plays for us in September. ;D

That is bad news. He looked good last week before he got injured early. Handy player, wil lbe good when he comes back.

To think we only gave a way a late draft pick for him too.

Justin Blumfield’s miserable run of luck since moving from Essendon to Richmond has continued with the 2000 premiership star expected to miss up to two months with a serious thigh injury.

Blumfield, who battled osteitis pubis during the pre-season, injured his thigh during Monday’s win over St Kilda at the Telstra Dome.

At first the Tigers thought Blumfield had only suffered a thigh strain but an MRI scan revealed instead that he torn his thigh muscle away from the bone.

Richmond football manager Greg Hutchison said Blumfield will miss six to eight matches but said the situation could have been even worse.

“He had the surgery to repair a detached Rec fem (thigh) muscle at 5pm on Wednesday and the surgery went really well,” Hutchison said.

“At first we thought he could be out for 12 weeks but hopefully he will be back in six to eight weeks.”

Blumfield was discharged from hospital on Wednesday morning and is not expected to resume running for at least three weeks.

Hutchison admitted the timing of the injury was unfortunate for the 25-year-old, who was just starting to settle in at his new club after his pre-season had been disrupted by groin problems.

After three quiet games since moving to the Tigers – Blumfield kicked an early goal against the Saints on Monday and was just starting to show his best form of the season when the injury occurred.

“He was just starting to find his feet so it is disappointing for him,” Hutchison said.

Amongst those in contention to replace Blumfield for Saturday’s MCG clash against Hawthorn are Clinton King, Andrew Krakouer, Royce Vardy and Andrew Mills.

Better news for the Tigers was the encouraging return of key defender Ben Holland in a VFL reserves match last week – his first game in 12 months following a knee re-construction.

Hutchison said Holland performed strongly and would play in the VFL seniors for Coburg against Box Hill on Anzac Day.

However Holland, who was a key factor in the Tigers’ reaching the 2001 preliminary final before missing nearly all of last season, is not expected to be ready for senior action for at least another two weeks.
