Question.

Has anyone taken up any of the offers floating about for replacing halogens with LED's?

Any good or a crock of *smile*?

take up the offer halogens are extremely dangerous in your roof space should never have been allowed by to be installed in commerical or domestic premises thats why the offer is there to try and fix the mistake the authority have made.halogens are a fire hazard they omit to much heat leds omit a lot less

yes michael my daughter just had hers done; do it halogens are extremely dangerous i am an electrican and have since the start refused to install them

Don't think we can get them in our rural area but I'd do it in a heartbeat. Cost us a small fortune to change our lights. The electrician was amazed our old LEDs hadn't started a fire. There was a heap of rubbish built up around them and they were very hot.

I had some done Michael. No dramas at all though i don't think it has affected the electricity bill too much. Just watch as they may try and get you to pay for fancier downlights that operate with remote control or at higher wattage downlights.

Still running halogens here, never replaced a glode, transformer.... Never had an issue. Been in house nearly 10 yrs i think and best lights ever. Even had a roof leak with water coming through the downlight socket.... Removed the transformer from the pooling water and kept on working. Although i have heard the more recent ones are a cheaper version. They were here before i moved in and been the longest lasting lights ive ever known.

Thanks guys

Any industry that markets with backpackers knocking on your has got to be dodgy.
However that could be the cynic in me.

I agree that halogens are iffy, but are these snake oil dudes, snake oil dudes or are they trying to improve the planet?

You sell them short. the mob i used were terrific, all sorted over the phone after i emailed a query through their website. Electrician showed up on the day, changed the lights without fuss, mentioned a stray wire in the roof that he traced back and ultimately took out. Zero cost.

Had ours done and now whenever certain lights are on the digital reception is completely stuffed on ABC & SBS.

Had about 30 replaced in my house at no charge. They turned up when they said they would and it was done inside an hour. 2 of the lights are a bit dodgy in that they turn themselves off or sometimes don't come on at all; probably just a dodgy connection on those 2 I just haven't got around to getting them fixed.

The biggest issue I had was the company telemarketing me afterwards trying to get me to switch my electricity account to them. But like all telemarketers if you ignore them long enough they eventually go away.

Otherwise it's all good and if they are doing it for free as part of a safety program why wouldn't you?

I used to sell em. There was always an issue around placement of the transformer and making sure the fittings were in a clear space isolated from insulation. A good electrician would do this. There was a baffle you could buy to be even more secure. I don't think many were installed to these specifications except maybe in commercial premises. I had quick internet check and at first glance this seems legit. LEDs have come a long way and use a fraction of the power, which means they generate a fraction of the heat. But placement of the transformer and wires is still an issue.

I've had mine done and didn't see much of a difference either, though that's not really a surprise given the rate that electricity bills have been going up..

I used to have 10 halogen downlights and I'd be replacing one every month or so.
Switched to LED 2 years ago and haven't had to replace one.
But I've not noticed any change in my power bill.

it,s not so much a cost saving it's a safety issue except the authorities won't admit fault in allowing halogens to be installed .you can get leds 240volts so you don't need transformers .I have 20/30 and haven't replaced any in 4 years

I had a relatively small number (9) of halogens replaced by a mob called Energy Makeovers (hope it's OK to use the name here)
They were very professional, showed up on time and the job was done quickly. Cost was 0 because I opted for the basic model of light.
Some fancier looking globes will incur a charge, for example if you want dimmable globes. No Dimma jokes please ! heh heh

Yep, I had the halogens replaced.
Needed the fancy globes for the dimmers.

The buggers flicker incessantly, you need to muck around with the knob to stop the flickering, it's like being at the blue light disco at the box hill south scout hall

no work today, so I rebuilt the letterbox.
Installed on the inside of the fence, looks like a work of art, beautifully painted
Go out later to admire my handiwork, the postie's been.
Origin energy bill stuck in the wet paint

That's because lighting is only a small part of your power bill. Heating and cooling use the most power by far. You should be saving a small amount but all those ads saying you'll save hundreds on your power bill every year are a con. Meaningless claim without specifying the conditions. What are they assuming, every single light in your house is 100W and running 24/7/365?
