Altering photo

I want to have a canvas made from the photo below of my 2 dogs. I've tried in a couple of programs to remove the chain, collar and tags3 but had no success. I removed them pixel by pixel but was left with white splotches instead. Can anyone please advise me how to go about them removing them please?

Rosy perhaps you could try to "sample" a section of your dog's coats near their collars and use it to create a new airbrush/paintbrush pattern which could then be used to colour over the collars.
