It's amazing that a club so short of membership, funds and facilities continues to do so well. Many said that once Carey, Stevens et al retired that they'd drop to cellar dwellers. Well 2005 proved that not only does the North heritage of success continue but it may grow stronger in 2006.
Again, North, too, choose to stick with the same set of coaches in 2006. Ably led by Laidley, with assistance from Bewick, McDonald & Crocker.

The list is as follows:
Glenn Archer 182 91 33 vet
Sav Rocca 195 112 32
Adam Simpson 185 89 30 vet
Shannon Grant 180 84 29
Jade Rawlings 196 97 28
Nathan Thompson 194 100 28
Brent Harvey 172 75 28
Jess Sinclair 182 84 27
Troy Makepeace 175 78 27
Jonathan Hay 194 93 26 new
Kasey Green 187 87 26 new
Shannon Watt 193 99 25
Corey Jones 187 90 25
Brady Rawlings 184 83 25 new
Leigh Harding 180 85 25
Leigh Brown 194 101 24
Brent LeCras 190 93 24
Cameron Thurley 183 76 24 new
Daniel Harris 180 81 24
Drew Petrie 197 103 23
Justin Perkins 188 87 23 rookie
Daniel Pratt 185 90 23
David Hale 201 105 22
Chad Jones 196 98 22
Mark Powell 193 91 22 new
Michael Firrito 186 92 22
Ben Schwarze 190 90 22
Joshua Gibson 189 95 22
Eddie Sansbury 182 85 22
Blake Grima 180 84 22
Djaran Whyman 177 75 22 rookie
Hamish McIntosh 203 108 21
Callum Urch 184 89 21
Daniel Wells 180 81 21
Joel Perry 196 100 20
Daniel McConnell 189 88 20 new
David Trotter 186 84 20
Scott McMahon 184 83 20 rookie
Brad Moran 200 103 19
Jesse Smith 191 85 19
Ed Lower 186 85 19 rookie
Andrew Swallow 183 77 19 new
Tim Hutchison 196 82 18 new
Matt Riggio 188 83 18 new

So, that's 44 players, including 2 vets, 9 newies & 4 rookies.
That's amazing. A club that struggles with membership, finances & facilities, finishes in the finals yet still recruits 9 new players, takes 4 rookies, and manages a full list of 44. Why can't we do that?
BTW, Djaran Whyman, is that the fellow who was running around at Coburg one or two years ago?

So there you see the reason for North's success - a very well managed list. Why do they get some rejects, or cast-offs, from other clubs - only to fill short-term gaps on the list.
The only fault in the list that I can see is in their key positions. They've got in a couple of oldies to fill some gaps there, but it probably isn't enough.
They are obviously impatient for either Hale or McIntosh to mature into the ruck. And their rover, Brent Harvey, is aging.

Their coverage of positions is as follows:
B: Makepeace 27 Hay 26 J.Rawlings 28
   Grima 22 Watt 25 Powell 22

HB: Sinclair 27 Brown 24 Archer 33
Green 26 Schwarze 22 Pratt 23
Perkins 23 Perry 20 Urch 21
Lower 19

C: Co.Jones 25 Harris 24 LeCras 24
Thurley 24 B.Rawlings 25 Sansbury 22
Trotter 20 McMahon 20 Riggio 18
                 Swallow 19

HF: Grant 29 Petrie 23 Harding 25
Gibson 22 McConnell 20

F: Ch.Jones 22 Thompson 28 Wells 21
Hutchison 18 Rocca 32 Whyman 22

R: Hale 22 Simpson 30 Harvey 28
McIntosh 21 Firrito 22
Moran 20 Smith 19

The Kangaroos have good depth to cover all positions with replacements.
Another strong finish in 2006, with possibly a final 4 berth.
A first rover must be very high on their agenda for the 2006 draft.

Big year for the Kangaroos as they have traded to finish top 4, if they miss the 8 will not what may happen.

Up forward Thompson needs to have a year like last and kick 60 goals, Rocca cant really play in same side and would find it hard to see where he will get a game. Leigh Brown may play forward after their recruiting as with a ruckman of Hale/Petrie or McIntosch. Plenty of options as tall key fwds and smalls would Grant/Harvey changing on ball, Leigh Harding and Corey Jones as a flanker.

On ballers is not the depth and will rely heavily on Wells with Grant and Harvey in the mix. Simpson, Rawlings, Harris and Firrito are more negating players although Harris does get some clearances.

Leigh Brown may play up fwd as tall backs they now have Hay, Watt, Rawlings, Pratt, Perry and Green. Perhaps Brown and Rawlings.j may change roles. Defence runners are made up of young players Urch, Trotter and Grima giving support to Makepeace and Sinclair.

As I said up the top the Kangaroos privately would be thinking it must be top 4 or we have failed. If fail it is interesting tom see what the strategy they take, if pass they can keep all draft picks with this year list and have a crack within 2 years.

Players to watch
Corey Jones is capable of 30 goals a year maybe tried in midfield.
McIntosch and Hale as rucking combination

Now or never
Leigh Harding needs to do more than 19 goals a year and release crappy singles.
Watt and Pratt need to earn a spot with Hay recruitment and Brown in the mix as well.
