Richmond coach Danny Frawley believes Sunday’s clash against Port Adelaide at Telstra Dome will be a chance to see what his players can achieve against what he says is the best team in the competition.
Speaking before Richmond’s training session at Punt Rd on Friday, Frawley suggested that despite the season being over in terms of finals chances, the team still had plenty to gain from its second last game of the year.
“We want to finish the year on a positive note,” Frawley said.
“I told our players all week they’re going to be playing on and against a team of individuals who are going to be playing in the finals – and who knows how far they are going to go – but they’re going to obviously shape the finals series a fair bit, because they’ve finished on top and they’ve been the form side of the competition.”
“I’ve really stressed to our boys that come finals time, I really want to make sure that they play positive football on Sunday against Port Adelaide, because they are the benchmark at this stage. It’s going to give us and more importantly them a gauge on where they’re at.”
Although Frawley said his side has been ‘getting a little bit of the ball’ in the last few weeks, he was adamant that his players ‘haven’t been using it the way we’ve wanted to’ during that period, but he was hopeful that returning to the Dome might reverse the Tigers’ fortunes.
“We normally play Telstra Dome really well. We’ve had one very disappointing performance there, so we go to that ground knowing that our best form is going to be competitive against them and it’s going to have to be our best form,” Frawley said.
Frawley indicated that young Tiger Chris Hyde would return to the side, after playing just four games this year.
“I really want to make sure we can give everyone an opportunity. Hyde gets his opportunity. He’s going to have a meaningful role this week, so it’s great to see a few of these youngsters play against some quality opponents and see how far they can go in this game,” Frawley said.
