MATCH REPORT
by Panthera tigris FC

A combination of a 90 minute+ drive to the footy and an early start on Monday meant that I couldn't attend the Tigers' round 22 clash with Melbourne at the 'G for the Sunday twilight fixture. I had to be content with watching the game on TV, despite the perfect late winter conditions. As it turns out the game was a cracker as the struggling Dees took it up to the Tigers who were on a high after a solid thumping of the likely finals team, Sydney, the previous week.

The typically slow starting Tigers came out of the blocks in a frenzy, with ferocious tackling and an effective forward press keeping the game locked in the forward line. Although not quite as wasteful as the previous week, the Tigers still need to capitalise better on these periods of dominance as they again were inaccurate on their forward 50 entries after forcing Melbourne turn overs. Despite this, the early dominance led to a lead, with Brad Miller in particular getting off the leash and hitting the scoreboard against his old side. Foley also started brightly as the Dees focussed on shutting down Martin and especially the acting skipper Cotchin.

Even with a far more effective forward press the Tigers are still clearly learning the craft as Melbourne were able to occasionally clear the zone and score easily. The Tigers are going to have to learn how to defend in these situations if they are to become a regular finals side, but the groundwork is clearly being laid for this. The game style demonstrated throughout this match shows that the Tigers game plan is maturing and now the players just need to do likewise.

The dominance of the Tigers around the ground continued throughout the first half with the Dees relying on breaking the zone and accuracy in front on goal to stay in touch. At half time the Tigers enjoyed a 26 point break and looked like the likely victors. As it turns out, it may be that a few of the Richmond players thought so as well as the team switched off completely in the 3rd quarter as Melbourne came roaring back into contention. The zone that had worked so effectively in the first half was consistently broken down in the 3rd and Melbourne hit the scoreboard time and again in a stunning 7 goal to 1 term that saw them unlikely leaders at 3 quarter time, albeit by a slender 8 points.

Although a small lead, the momentum was well and truly with Melbourne and it was clear the the Tigers would have to dig deep to swing the match in their favour. The early signs in the quarter were promising as the tackling intensity that was so prominent in the first half returned for the Tigers and the game turned into an arm wrestle. The Tigers consistent pressure, personified in the frenetic attack on the ball of the skipper and the desperation of Brett Deledio to make a couple of textbook tackles to save goal scoring opportunities, turned the tide and Richmond hit the front and piled on the score with some great goals from Martin, Riewoldt and Edwards. With a small buffer and time running out the Tigers just had to withstand a late surge from the Dees who closed the margin to 7 points before the final siren blew to signal a close won victory to Richmond.

In the voting this week, Axel Foley was the clear favourite, as he returned to some really solid form as the Dees locked down on the Tigers' other prime movers allowing Foley to run freely. To add to his clearance work he also scored a couple of early goals. Interestingly, in a year that has been average by his standards on his return from injury Foley's other 'best Tiger on ground' performance came against the Dees in our previous encounter. Clearly, Melbourne need to pay a bit more attention to Axel, especially as his form improves with an injury free season under the belt. Dustin Martin also attracted a lot of votes as his acts of sheer strength and brilliance shone through after a relatively flat couple of months. The goals he kicked highlighted the skills he already has in only his second year. The first was a dribbled goal from a difficult angle and the second was an act of strength to stand in a tackle and kick accurately when the game was in the balance. The kid is a keeper. Finally, Tucky continued his solid form since his recall and continued to ask the question as to his omission for the majority of the season. When the coaching staff blame youth as the reason for a number of losses, it boggles the mind as to why you wouldn't play a seasoned workhorse like Tuck to do the hard yards for the side. I don't think it is a coincidence that we have looked a far more competitive outfit with Tucky at the bottom of the packs.

This week sees the Tigers travel to take on the Crows in what looms as a difficult ask. Between our poor form on the road this season, our decade of misery playing them at their home and their recent good form it will take something special for the Tigers to walk away with their third victory on the trot. If there are any South Australians, or travelling PREnders who are attending the match and would like to provide a brief report, it would be appreciated.
