2011 PREmier Fighting Tiger Award - THE AWARDS

Re: 2011 PREmier Fighting Tiger Award - Round 6 vs Brisbane - VOTE HERE

3. Martin - not just the possies but the damage he created with them. Some unbelievable long kicks to advantage.
2. Nahas - best game for the Tigers ever. Has become much more consistent too
1. Foley - he's back, in and under, 40 possies, wow!

Loved the Kingy goal even though he ran 30metres+ without bouncing ;D

MATCH REPORT
by Streak

It was a night of expectations at the MCG last Saturday when the mighty Richmond were preparing to battle Brisbane. Tiger fans came out in force on a perfect night for football, with the crowd of nearly 38,000 being a record for a match between the two teams. And it was the crowd that underlined those expectations so clearly, not just by their numbers but the tense atmosphere (albeit via television) that surrounded the match prior to kick-off.

Despite playing a winless side on the bottom of the ladder, it was a game the Tigers were favoured to win, could win, should win, had to win. To suggest this is not to take anything away from the Lions, who have been unlucky so far this season, being very competitive in all of their matches. But their injury depleted side on the road to a team starting to believe in itself meant a loss by any margin would have been as unbearable to the faithful as almost anything experienced over the last 30 years. There was light at the end of the tunnel, but Saturday night was going to be a very clear indication of where things were heading.

Stand in Skipper Merrett for the Lions won the toss, and they rode that luck into the start of the match. An unusually errant kick from Martin into the forward 50 was rebounded at lighting speed resulting in a goal to Rich with only 30 seconds off the clock. But the much maligned Nahas gave us a glimpse of what was to come on the night with a well taken goal to reply almost immediately.

It set a pattern for the quarter, with the Tigers looking to be the better side, Martin, Foley and Cotchin dominating, but not finishing it off on the scoreboard. Indeed the exciting game play that saw fast open ball movement was proving a problem to the Tigers, who used their speed to create heaps of opportunity, but were hurt on the rebound by poor turnovers at critical times.

The Lions broke to a two goal lead late in the 1st quarter courtesy of Power and Beams as youngsters O’Brien and Hanley showed what they could do, and it was time for the Tigers to find a steadier. Who else to do this but yet another player starting to emerge for the Tigers in Tyrone Vickery, whose goal after showing great awareness and playing on made it a one goal game at quarter time.

Indeed Vickery’s goal seemed to spark the Tigers into action, as in the second quarter they continued to dominate with much more effective ball use while strangling the Lions forward supply. Jake King showed his recent form is starting to become something the Tigers fans should expect more of with an impressive “Dustin Martin like” bustling goal running straight and carrying defenders with him. And Martin himself gave a highlight of football perfection with a missile like pass to Riewoldt that covered 55m at a maximum height of about 2m, straight to the chest. You would not see a better kick. A 5.3 to 0.4 quarter had the Tigers in command with a 23 point halftime lead and seemingly set for a run away win.

An early Vickery goal in the 3rd, and it looked how far Richmond. But suddenly the game swung as Richmond seemed to lose its rotations, and the Lions pounced. Power replied for the Lions, and they quickly added two more. Nahas grabbed one, but then Power again kicked one. The Tigers looked to be out on their feet, having lost Tuck in the second quarter to a rib injury, and with both Newman and Graham on the sidelines apparently injured as well. The Lions actually got to a late 3rd quarter 5 point lead before the man for the moment conjured a turnaround goal.

Merrett had been having a pretty good night on Riewoldt when he was penalised for deliberately running the ball out of bounds. The umpire awarded a free that was there, although possibly a little harsh given some of the stuff you see let go. The occasion was made for our man Jack. Boundary line shot, 35m out with the Tigers desperately needing one. So what does Jack do, he kicks it of course, but it wasn’t just the goal that was demoralising. Jack rubbed the raw wound with a goal that a Lions U/7 Auskicker could have touched on the line, if they had had anyone there. Nahas added another, and the Tigers were 8 points up at 3 quarter time.

Richmond blew away any fitness concerns in the last quarter to be in complete, if inaccurate, control. A 4.8 to 2.2 return gave the Tigers a handy 26 point win.

There were a lot of the expected positives to come out of the game for the Tigers apart from the win. Martin and Foley brought their own footys, and although there was some questionable disposal in their numbers, the weight of averages says you can’t be perfect when you have 35 and 40 possessions respectively. Robin Nahas had easily his best game for the club with 26 possessions, 3 goals and a fantastic display of hard running, while Jake King only had 9 disposals, but snared 3 goals and was hard at it all night. Riewoldt was Riewoldt, kicking 5 despite being relatively well held by Merrett. Really it was hard to find a poor player for the Tigers, but mention should also be made of Reece Conca, who just looks like a ready made AFL player after 6 games.

For the losers, Black was unstoppable with 34 possessions and a ton of leadership, while Luke Power kicked 4 goals and kept them in touch on the scoreboard all night.

But for all those Tiger fans who witnessed the win, that was the critical aspect in it all. Richmond was carried to the win by its emerging players, guys who are starting to show they belong at this level, and young guys starting out in their careers. The Lions relied on old hands to win them the game.

There really does look to be a new dawn breaking at Tigerland.

EDITORIAL

In the voting this week we saw 3 tigers deservedly crack the 100 vote mark. Nahas' continued good form saw him take the win over the possession machines in Foley and Martin.

This year has seen a real battle at the top of the table and this week continued that trend as the Tiger guns jostle for position at the top. This week saw Martin take top spot for the first time this season and few PREnders would have predicted that Robin Nahas would be sitting in 4th spot after 6 rounds. It is clear that the competition is fierce when the current leader of the Coleman medal race is relegated to 5th place in the PREmier Fighting Tiger Award.

This week sees the Tigers take on the Dockers at the 'G in a Saturday twilight fixture. This match should be a great test for the young Tigers as the quality of the opposition is lifted. I'll be there to hopefully see Richmond take out its third win on the trot!

Many thanks to Streak for a great match report this week.

Carn' the Tiges!

Love the work but if Nahas was best on ground a lot of people here have no idea.

Bit harsh.

He plays a different role then Martin or even Foley.

His work rate was top notch all game. He was superb in his role all game.

Its all opinion mate, this isn't just a midfielders medal.
