Hi all,
Sorry I'm late with these this year. Better late than never.
But I was in two minds whether to bother. But I did on the note of personal curiosity.
I'm doing these alphabetically this year.
First, Adelaide.
Adelaide has been in transition over the last few years and appears as if it is still in that process. Its list is as follows:
From this, we can see that Adelaide is split between those players that are mature and above, and those that are still in the junior stage, with just over a handful in between.
They appear to be relying heavily again on their 6 twilighters - Edwards, Doughty, Goodwin, McLeod, Burton & Stevens - to play a core role.
This group has successfully got the Crows into the finals each year but, then again, it's been more than 10 years now since they took out AFL's ultimate prize.
The other major noticeable item is just the strength of their junior list. Especially in the 3 groups - smaller $ smaller mediums, mobile talls and genuine talls.
Why so many?
One aspect could be that if the Crows recruit more than what they need in these groups, they're not necessarily relying on each and every one of these juniors to make it.
Second, their list may be moving towards a Geelong type structure with over 190s playing on the defensive flanks & wings.
Thirdly, the concentration of juniors in these groups focuses on their lack of developing players higher up in these groups, eg, no 22-24yo developing players in the <180cm and the 190-194cm groups, only Douglas in the 1809-184cm group, and only Maric in the 195-199cm group.
Maybe it's a combination of all 3 factors.
Gutfeel says that the Crows will still be relying heavily on their twilighters who have already proven that they're past their 4 qtrs per game, 22/23 games per season performances.
Personally, the tranformation continues and another 3 years till the Crows are truly in a position to win the big one.
But credit to them for maintaining themselves so well through their transformation.
