We didn't look at Geelong last year.
If we had, we might have seen a couple of the chinks that were exposed on GF day, last year. But, then again, it's easy to talk retrospectively.

Here is their positional depth:

B Wojcinski (28,180,132,45) Scarlett (29,192,206,16) Harley (30,193,184,11)
D.Johnson (27,181,71,16) Mackie (24,192,82,52) Rooke (27,189,112,34)
Gillies (19,192,0,0)
HB Enright (27,187,150,45) Egan (25,196,59,1) J.Hunt (27,185,122,16)
Milburn (31,189,235,87) Taylor (22,193,21,3) T.Hunt (18,183,0,0)
Laidler# (19,189,0,0) Weadon# (19,185,0,0)
C Corey (27,191,176,54) Ablett (24,182,146,191) Tenace (23,182,54,11)
Ling (28,189,182,106) Kelly (25,183,129,61) Donohue (19,182,0,0)
Selwood (20,182,45,13) Moles# (23,183,0,0)
HF S.Johnson (25,189,112,210) McKenna (19,195,0,0) Motlop (18,182,0,0)
Gamble (21,184,14,21) Simpson (19,196,0,0) Hogan (20,182,0,0)
F Mooney (29,195,168,206) Lonergan (24,197,23,42) Chapman (27,179,155,204)
Hawkins (20,197,19,25) Brown (18,195,0,0) Stokes (24,177,52,79)
Byrnes (24,175,54,27)
A.Varcoe# (18,179,0,0)
R Ottens (29,202,204,236) Bartel (25,187,133,84) T.Varcoe (20,180,34,29)
Blake (23,200,58,8) Allwright# (18,187,0,0) Djerrkura (20,176,0,0)
Mumford# (22,200,3,0) Ediriwickrama# (18,178,0,0)
West (21,198,6,1)
Simpson (20,206,0,0)
As we can see it looks very good & even and there is no doubt that Geelong will perform strongly in 2009.
However CHF still remains a problem for them and with McKenna & Simpson seemingly not yet ready, much will still rely on both Mooney & Ottens, now twilighters, to fill the key competitive marking positions.
We remember the great job Nathan Ablett performed in filling that hole in 2007.
CHFs win GFs.

Also, their smaller running backs are either getting long in the teeth or still in teenage years. Which may be why the Hawthorn mosquito fleet cut them up in the 2nd half of that big game.

For Geelong the last 2 years is now beginning to take them into the back end of their window.
Much will depend on how quickly they can get their youngens up playing top level AFL.

Eight games again at their favourite Kardinia Park gives them a good base to begin with.
An interesting year for the Cattery.

Surely Mooney is CHF. Ablett didn't really do a good job in 2007 either, he shouldn't have been in the GF side but was lucky that their lack of depth in that area meant that there was no alternative.

Mooney did have a very good 2007 GF. But then, so did pretty well all the team.

Last year they tended to play him closer to goal.

Mooney does become their key tall focus by way of a lack of other options.
That's probably the reason why they've recruited Simpson (196), McKenna (195) & Brown (195) in the last couple of drafts.

Not sure what their thinking is on Hawkins. 20yo, 19 games in 2 years for 25 goals on limited opportunity is a very good effort.
Yet there seems to be this lingering hesitation by them towards him.

They played closer to goal except when it counted in the grand final!

On Hawkins i think injurys have played a part in his lack of games, i think you'll find he is there prefered option.

Very odd not to have included Hawkins and Mooney in key forward possies Phantom.

Despite the Hawks premiership i still believe the Cats were the outstanding team in the competition but the history books won't show it.

Will be top 2 again.
