Unless a miracle occurs it is obvious that the RFC will have a new coach in 2005. The question is how many years should he be signed up for?

Going by the threads on the PRE forum success needs to be found quickly (ie. 2 to 3 years) otherwise 'the mob' will be calling for 'the coach to be sacked' and 'all dud players to be delisted'.

IMO if we manage to successfully court a senior coach with experience then a longer term contract should be offered and give the coach time to 'put his team together' from draft picks (either 'grow' young players or sign 'opposition star players out of contract').

This may mean waiting for 4 to 5 years for a successful team to be 'built' that would start a 'winning dynasty' ala the sixties and seventies.

What is the general opinion?

I think the length of the contract would depend on who is appointed. The better the coach is perceived, the longer the contract.

Agree with Tiger of Old.

3 years should give enough time to guage the true direction and 2 year extensions should act to combat complacency.

If perchance another Sheedy comes along then deal with that situation when/if it arises.

I agree that three years is a good first-up contract, because it gives the club the chance to assess improvement while also giving the coach a genuine opportunity to stamp his mark on the list.

However, if we were to get a Matthews/Malthouse/Sheedy, you would have to consider a longer term if that's what they were demanding (at this point, I'd office Leigh Matthews the keys to the city, a dozen hookers and a brown paper bag of US currency if that's what he was asking for, but I think he would feel pretty happy at the moment up in the sun).

By the way, I heard an interview with Garry O'Donnell last night on MMM where he said he was very happy up in Brisbane and seemed to be in no hurry to move in order to take up a senior coaching role (though he did say he would consider any offers when they came). For those who were plumping for him to be our next coach, you may have to make another pick.

Considering there will be at least 3 clubs looking for a new coach at the end of the season.
We will be under a bit of pressure to give a Wallace or a Sheedy 4 or more years to entice them to RFC. For an O'Donnell or any other untried coach at senior level, 2 years plus an option for the third.

Wallace said it would take 5 years to built a successful team
in that case give him 3 year plus an option of 2 years
I am willing to waiting 5 year under Wallace
