2023 Draft Thread.

I reckon history will show this year was a bumper year for rucks, I'm struggling to find a comparable year and just a shame Mitch Edwards didn't fall through.
Was it the Ruck's stood out more because of the lack of quality among the kp player's .
I thought there where 4 decent Rucks this year, the other's just ok.

Suns have 3 academy kids for next year so would be keeping the 2024 1st round pick
They are under this system but what I am saying is that the price is too low. They haven’t paid enough. Ditch the 20% discount.
If they had to go into serious 2024 deficit then maybe they would have to make a choice to not take one or two of the academy players

I think it was just a good year for rucks, 4 AFL standard players in the main draft virtually unheard of, Max Gawn & Sam Jacobs in 2009 was a good year but these were latish picks and were fairly speculative. Last year the rucks were lean, Barnett gets 5th place if he was in the 2023 pool, I think that speaks volumes for the depth of talent available.

It will be interesting to see if the number of Melbourne based draftees increases over the next few years as the effect of the lack of games during the Covid years starts to wear off. The Melbourne kids had a lot less opportunities to play games or even attend group training sessions than other kids outside of the ring of steele in 2020 and 2021.

Yes agreeing with you. Just pointing out the Suns most likely will have another advantage next year. So would have to make a decision on which one to take

Maybe in line with your thinking all clubs get the one 20%, that keeps if fair to everyone. Then no more discounts for any 2nd 3rd 4th etc matching bids

Just on the Academy's and pick swaps.

Father Sons are just as big a rort. Any changes to the value of picks for academy's should be the same for father sons.

As s starting point, ditch the 20% for all then work from there.

Yeah have to agree,Quality of Rucks where a stand out this year .
At least the quality depth of player's improves a lot next year as a whole ,and a couple of decent Rucks .

Yes. The main benefit is last right of refusal on a player. That is numero uno. In a normal open market situation, parties will pay a premium for that right, not get a discount on top of it.

They'll only change father-son once Marlion's boys look like bargains for us. Then they'll bring in a 'no prison time' or 'only if you went to an APS school' type rule.

I have said this before, and I'll say it again, I reckon change of coach changes the types of players we're telling our recruiting staff we want to build our side around. I don't think there's any coincidence we've change the type we want, even though a KPF this deep in the draft is a long shot to make a big impact at AFL level.

We recruited players for Dimma's game plan. Now we want to go up the guts. I think there'll be more of an emphasis on trying to win the ball first, and smart users of the footy with Yze. 1 draft, let's see what they do with the nuclear stockpile in 2024.
💯 agree there was a shift in strategy.

Interesting Sainst pick Riley Bonner delisted by port in the pre-season draft (only 3 picks, Hawks relist Wingard, GC relist Day.
The rookie draft will start shortly. (31 picks expected)

How does Melbourne get to push Kynan Brown into a Cat B spot? Wasn't he training with Under 18 footy sides?

So we are leaving a spot open for the summer. I wonder who the train on invitees are.
